Come hell or high water, the Wings seem to be in the playoffs, while the Leafs keep you guessing whether they will showcase an elite performance – or an absolute stinker.

All things being fair, you can’t fault Toronto for much lately. The Buds have gone 5-1 at home recently after some horrifying efforts a few weeks ago.

Most impressive for the Leafs has been the balanced scoring through all four lines (you didn’t get that last year with thugs Colton Orr and Frazer McLaren) and the recent dominant performance of goalie Jonathan Bernier.

Ignorant comments about world leaders aside, Bernier has shown his talent that never got a chance to be shown as Jonathan Quick’s backup in L.A. Now the key is for him to stay healthy and keep it up.

Detroit is six points up on the Leafs, despite Toronto’s recent success. The Red Wings’ perennial victories are becoming as reliable as the change of the seasons in the Great Lakes region.

The Wings rank in the top 10 in all major categories this year; being fuelled especially by goals galore (averaging over three per game) and a masterful penalty kill (third in the NHL at a success rate of 87.1%).

Gus Nyquist and Tomas Tatar have been great, Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel “The Magic Man” Datsyuk have been their usual selves, and Jimmy Howard has been solid between the pipes.

It’s a nice (possible) swan song for head coach Mike Babcock, whose contract is up after this year and will command large dollars from potential suitors. Nothing better than seeing your team rocket up the standings when you need to discuss a new contract.

Detroit is tied with Tampa Bay for tops in the Atlantic division.

With the way the Leafs have been playing of late, they could absolutely steal this game.

Seeing players like Nazem Kadri, James van Reimsdyk, Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul dovetail with their play bodes well for this hockey club.

Still, on the second leg of a back-to-back (Toronto earned a nice 4-1 victory at home against Calgary last night) and down in Motown, the smart money is on Toronto struggling to keep up to the well-oiled Wings.

Take the UNDER

Expect the Leafs to sputter a little in the Joe.
