This will be heavyweight tilt tonight, despite the fact that only one team is holding down a playoff spot at present.

The Rangers have all but punched their ticket to the post season, but the Kings still have work ahead of them as they remain two points back of the Calgary Flames for third place in the Pacific Division.

Los Angeles

The Kings come into tonight’s game riding a 6-2-2 stretch over their last 10 games. The reigning champs will have to play at that clip or better for their final 10 games if they hope to return to the playoffs for a chance to defend their crown.

Things don’t start out easy for the Kings on their home stretch as they take on one of the top teams in the NHL in the New York Rangers.

LA dropped the first match up between the two back in January by a count of 4-3 and will be looking for not only some revenge, but to keep themselves alive in the playoff hunt.

If there’s one team that has proven they can answer the bell when they’re up against the wall it’s the Kings, who always seem to play their best hockey when they need it most.

The Kings dropped the Devils by a score of 3-1 last night but take a big step up in competition tonight against a Rangers team that just dumped the Anaheim Ducks 7-2.

Martin Jones will be in net tonight for likely the last time of the regular season as Jonathan Quick gets one last night of rest before the race to the finish line.

New York

The Rangers have been playing playoff style hockey for about a month now, save for the debacle on Sunday when they wiped out the Ducks by a five-goal margin.

That was just the third time the Rangers scored more than two goals in the month of March.

The lack of goal scoring hasn’t hurt the blue shirts though, as they’ve buckled down and committed to playing a tight defensive game where on most nights two goals is enough to win, in fact during their five game win streak this month the Rangers scored just 10 goals while allowing only three.

Cam Talbot has filled in admirably for the injured Henrik Lundqvist, but the commitment to team defense has been a big reason that Talbot’s numbers are what they are.

If this team can get back in gear offensively they will be a handful come playoff time, but there’s always a propensity with this group to go stagnant for long stretches, as aside from Rick Nash, there aren’t many natural goal scorers in the bunch.

Kings vs. Rangers 4* Free Pick

Such a tough pick to make as the logical choice seems to be the Rangers at home where they’re 23-8-5.

The Kings are the Kings though and this is the time of year where they make their move and always seem to find that next level of play. My best bet tonight is to stick with the Under on this one.

If you must make the pick I’d take the Rangers solely based on the fact that LA is on the second half of back to back games.

The safest pick tonight though is to take the Under paying -120.
