The Ducks dominated the regular season series last year going 4-0-1 against their state rivals but the Kings showed up when it counted the most.

These two teams are expected to contend once again in the competitive Pacific Division and Western Conference – Wednesday’s game will give us a good idea of exactly where both teams stand.

The last time we saw the Los Angeles Kings was Saturday when they broke out of a scoring slump and netted five against arguably the hottest team in the league at the time – the Vancouver Canucks.

The Kings have gone 2-0-1 in their last three games and have returned to the defensive brand of hockey that has become their signature the last few seasons. They have allowed just one regulation goal in their last three games but will have a hard time duplicating those numbers against an Anaheim team that can and likely will score some goals Wednesday.

The Kings are averaging 2.40 goals per game this season but were in a bit of an offensive slump before breaking out with five goals last time out. Tyler Toffoli has led the way so far for the Kings – he has seven goals and 10 assists so far and broke a three game pointless streak Saturday with a goal and two assists.

Marian Gaborik, Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter each had two points Saturday – a good sign for the Kings ahead of Wednesday’s showdown.

The problem for the Kings has been secondary scoring however – outside of the top line of Jeff Carter, Toffoli and Tanner Pearson no other King has more than seven points in LA’s 15 games so far.

Mike Richards has seven points, Anze Kopitar has five points and Justin Williams and Gaborik have just three points on the year, although Gaborik has played just seven games.

Jonathan Quick will get the start between the pipes and he’s been hot after a slow start to the season. Quick has a 0.97 GAA in his last three starts and was 3-2-0 with a 2.14 GAA at Anaheim in the regular season and playoffs last season.

The biggest story out of Anaheim is the health of two key contributors. Anaheim will be without leading scorer Corey Perry and veteran defenseman Francois Beauchemin, each out with a viral gland infection. Each has been ordered to stay away from the team until the source of the infection is determined – hmmmm.

Perry’s 11 goals on the year will be missed by a team that has scored just 12 goals in their last eight games.

The next best Ducks have just four goals compared to Perry’s 11 – Ryan Getzlaf and Sami Vatanen will have to carry the load and new Duck Ryan Kesler will have to improve on his three goals so far.

Frederik Andersen will get the start in goal for Anaheim looking to build on his impressive numbers so far this season. Andersen has a 1.56 GAA so far, among the league leaders in that department and has a 1.25 GAA while going 1-0-2 in his last three starts.

[dfads params=’groups=64161&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

He is 3-0-0 with a 1.62 goals-against average and .949 save percentage in three starts against the Kings.

The illness that has plagued the Ducks the last week or so is a major factor here – without Perry and Beauchemin this team just isn’t the same.

Los Angeles Kings

The Kings have caught the Ducks at precisely the right time – take LA to draw first blood in the season series.
