This is by far the biggest game on the NHL schedule tonight as two heavyweights will collide with major playoff implications on the line.

The Kings have done what they always do and saved their best hockey for late in the season and are within one point of third place in the Pacific Division.
The Blackhawks are fighting to get to second in the Central Division in hopes of locking up home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Kings

The visitors come in having won six of their last 10 games for a record of 6-3-1. In that stretch the Kings have looked like the same team from the past two seasons and have been dominant in dispatching of some pretty high quality opponents, and on the road no less.

L.A. knocked off both the Islanders and Rangers following a win over the Devils to start their current five game road trip. They took a bit of a misstep against a Minnesota team that is playing very well and things don’t get any easier tonight when they take on the Blackhawks.

With the Calgary Flames playing tonight in Dallas, a Kings win paired with a Flames loss in regulation would put L.A. one point up on Calgary with a game in hand and just six games remaining.

The Kings are already in playoff mode and every game is huge at this point so expect them to be at their best the rest of the way.

Blackhawks

Not to gush over the Kings too much here, but the Blackhawks are eight points up on L.A. in the standings and are playing at home tonight and are still a slight underdog according to odds makers.

Whether or not the players look at sports odds is up for debate, but the Blackhawks will know that they’ll have to be on point tonight if they want to get the W. Chicago has an identical 6-3-1 record as the Kings over their last 10 and also boast wins over the Islanders and Rangers, as well as the fast fading San Jose Sharks.

The concerning thing with this team has been their propensity to take nights off against weaker opponents, as is evidenced by a 4-0 loss to Dallas, a 4-1 loss to Philadelphia and a 5-2 loss to Columbus.

Don’t expect this team to take the night off tonight with the Kings coming to visit as these two know each other very well.

Kings vs. Blackhawks  4* Free Pick

Full entertainment value will be the order of the day in this one and expect nothing less than a playoff type atmosphere in the United Center tonight. The Blackhawks are coming off a hard fought win over the Jets last night, and due to the back to back games are likely to start Scott Darling in net tonight.

Don’t discount the backup netminder however, as he blanked the New York Rangers his last time out. I’m always partial to a home underdog and the Kings are wrapping up a pretty long road trip here and looked like they were fading a bit in their game against the Wild.

The teams split their first two games of the year in L.A. and I like Chicago to win the rubber match in their own building.

Take Chicago to win this one.
