The Islanders play the middle leg of their five game road trip, and the middle stage of their three game trip through California. The Ducks have been flying high early this season and with 20 points sit atop the NHL. Anaheim is returning home to the Honda Centre after a four game road trip.

Anaheim has dropped just one game at home this season, while the Isles have struggled on this road trip and are in the midst of a three game losing streak.

All signs point to a Ducks domination in this one but let’s take a closer look at the teams.

Islanders

The season started out with such promise for the Islanders who jumped out of the starting gate with four straight wins. They have struggled to maintain consistency since that start though and are 2-5-0 since, but are still holding onto third place in the Metropolitan Division with 12 points.

It doesn’t really take a genius to see why the Islanders haven’t been piling up wins since their hot start, and it’s on the back end and in net. In the four wins that the Islanders opened the season with they won by scores of 5-3, 4-3, 6-3 and 4-3. Giving up three goals a game isn’t generally a winning strategy and at some point your own offense will dry up and you need to be able to win those tight, grinding games.

This has shown in spades with the Isles’ trip out west where teams play a much more sound defensive brand of hockey and New York has been pummeled in their three games so far, being outscored 12-4. Goaltenders Jaroslav Halak and Chad Johnson have to be better if this team wants to be a legitimate playoff contender.

Ducks

What can you say about the Ducks that they haven’t already stated with their play? They’re a very good hockey team and they make the game look easy on a lot of nights. The goal scoring machine that is Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf is right back to their old ways and the two have combined for 29 points in 13 games.

If there’s one cautionary statement I can make for this team tonight it’s that it looks as if Jason LaBarbera will be getting the start in net as both Frederik Andersen and John Gibson are dealing with injuries and won’t even be dressed tonight. The Ducks recalled Ivan Bobkov from Norfolk to back up LaBarbera tonight.

Ok, so maybe there’s two caution flags here, sorry. The Ducks are returning home after being on the road since October 28, and I’m always a little cautious of teams coming home after more than a week away. The last time the Ducks played at the Honda Centre they were beaten soundly to the tune of 4-1 by the San Jose Sharks.

Islanders vs. Ducks 4* Free Pick

The Ducks are certainly the better team in this one, but without either of their regular goalies taking to the net I can see this one being a close back and forth goal scoring affair. The Islanders are going to be anxious to snap out of this current funk and I think their offensive talent led by John Tavares and Kyle Okposo will keep this one from getting out of hand.

4* Pick: Take the Islanders +1.5 paying -195.

I can see a 4-3 Ducks wins or even a 4-4 game that ends in OT or shootout.
