The Flames and the Sharks are scrapping for position in the Pacific division, for the honor of being second place behind the Anaheim Ducks, who are flying high atop the division with 75 points.

San Jose has been true to form, but Calgary has overachieved to this point – its fans must feel like they are playing with house money.

The Flames are enjoying earlier-than-anticipated success thanks to a breakout year from defenseman Mark Giordano and recent shrewd draft picks, second-year center Sean Monahan and talented rookie winger Johnny Gaudreau.

Monahan, the former Ottawa 67, is leading the team in goals and brings a playmaking flair to the offense. American phenom Gaudreau has a sick pair of mitts and both should be elite players in the NHL for the forseeable future.

It doesn’t hurt that Giordano is having the best season of his career at age 31.

Flames team President Brian Burke catches plenty of flak from his days building a “broken model” in Toronto, but the reality is he has come to Western Canada again in his career and struck gold – not for the first time if you count Vancouver and Anaheim.

He and Flames GM Brad Treliving are hurrying the timeline on what was a scorched-earth rebuild for Calgary just a couple of seasons ago. Maybe they don’t make the playoffs this season, but the Flames can hold their heads high.

The Sharks, meanwhile, seem to always have a strong unit in the regular season. It’s postseason hiccups that plagues this franchise.

With a record of 28-19-7, the Sharks are two points up on Calgary for second in the Pacific. They ride a strong power play (converting at a 21% clip) and tidy hockey to solid results.

Veteran center Joe Thornton is still setting things up at age 35 (he has 34 assists and 45 points on the campaign) and San Jose can pride itself on being strong up the middle; Thornton, Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture all play the center position.

Still, until you see a Stanley Cup final appearance, it is hard to put the Sharks up there with the likes of the Chicago Blackhawks and L.A. Kings in the Western Conference.

The Sharks seem to be this close (holds fingers apart a tiny amount) every year, and it would be nice to see them break through. It has been enough years being playoff-eligible, however, that I’ll believe it when I see it.

Yet, the strength up the middle and scoring from blueliners Brent Burns and Marc-Eduoard Vlasic will probably be enough to douse the Flames in the Shark Tank.
