While Vancouver has looked good so far in winning both of their games including one in a shootout to the Oilers, Edmonton has been nothing short of miserable – four games with ZERO wins.

Vancouver hasn’t played since their shootout victory against the Oilers while Edmonton has played twice since Saturday – losing both games in miserable fashion.

Is it time for the Oilers to get off the deck? Or will Vancouver keep the early-season momentum going? Let’s take a look.

The Vancouver Canucks return to the ice on Friday night feeling pretty good about themselves. The team has scored eight goals in the young season and has yet to be beaten. They have fired 76 pucks at their opposing goaltender, the Sedins each have four points on the season and the power play is clicking along at 30% so far.

Translation – things are going well for Vancouver early in the season.

Goaltending hasn’t quite stolen the show yet for Vancouver but Ryan Miller has been OK. Miller has a 2.88 GAA in the two games with an unflattering .889 GAA. It is unclear as to who will be between the pipes for the Canucks Friday – Miller or Eddie Lack but you’d have to figure Miller will get another start after the Canucks week off.

The Oilers are struggling – that’s putting it mildly! Through their first four games (all losses), they have averaged a whopping 5.50 goals against – absolutely horrendous numbers so far.

Their penalty kill is 68.8 % so far and only two players have more than one goal in the four games this year. Simply put the Oilers are not getting it done in either end of the rink.

Taylor Hall continues to lead the way – he had two goals and an assist in Edmonton’s 7-4 loss to the Arizona Coyotes Wednesday but he has just one point in the previous three games.

Jordan Eberle had two assists Wednesday – his only points so far (although he missed Edmonton’s third game) and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is in danger of missing his third straight game with injury Friday night.

The Big Three will absolutely have to play up to their potential night in and night out – Edmonton just doesn’t seem to have the talent or depth to be taken all that seriously.

It is clear that Edmonton will HAVE to score to stay in games this year they are averaging 2.75 goals so far – OK except for the fact that the defense is giving up 5 1/2. Goaltender Viktor Fasth is on injured reserve and Ben Scrivens is 0-2-0 with a 5.22 GAA and .800 save percentage. Ugh!

NHL Gambling Trends

• Over is 7-2 in VAN last 9 games following a win.
• VAN are 5-16 in their last 21 road games.
• EDM are 24-79 in their last 103 vs. Pacific.
• Over is 6-2-1 in EDM last 9 home games.
• EDM are 3-7 in their last 10 home games.
• Home team is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.
• VAN are 19-9 in the last 28 meetings.

It is impossible to like the Edmonton Oilers heading into their fifth game of the season – impossible. Nothing has gone right for this team so far – and there seems to be little reason for any sort of optimism.
