Free Pick: Vancouver Canucks vs. Calgary Flames NHL Betting Lines and Preview

Both teams have a lot of work to do in order to become relevant in the Western Conference – it all starts Wednesday night!

The Vancouver Canucks will be a lot different when they step onto the ice on in their 2014 debut – gone is Jon Tortarella’s bad attitude, Ryan Kesler’s pouty persona and some role players that simply couldn’t make Vancouver a better team.

In are new coach Willie Desjardins, the right winger that the Sedins have sadly missed the last couple of seasons Radim Vrbata and Nick Bonino and Lukas Sbisa who inject an element of youth into an aging lineup.

Daniel and Henrik Sedin still exists as two potential Comeback Players of the Year, Alex Burrows is due for a better season and names like Jannik Hansen and Chris Higgins return hungry as decent depth roll players. Vancouver should be OK offensively this upcoming season – far better than the one that bumbled their way through a miserable season last year.

[dfads params=’groups=16&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Defensively the Canucks are a tad thin – Kevin Bieksa is banged up already. Alex Edler has to be better than he was last season, Chris Tanev is back and Ryan Miller has been added to solidify what was a goaltending debacle under former GM Mike Gillis.

Defensively the Canucks are poised to be middle-of-the-pack – just like the offense.

The Calgary Flames have optimism – but that doesn’t win games!

The Flames will be young – that’s for sure. Sean Monahan returns as likely their best player in just his second season in the NHL while Sam Bennett and Johnny Gaudreau should see some playing time as well for the youngest team in the NHL.

It will take some time for the prospects to find their groove meaning that a slow start for this team is almost a certainty.

There were some changes defensively for Calgary as well – they addressed their biggest need by signing Jonas Hiller from Anaheim.

[dfads params=’groups=64161&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

He lost his starting job last year to a pair of rookies and while motivation for a huge bounce back could be a factor, it looks as though Hiller is destined to be considered an average NHL keeper for the rest of his career.

Hiller will help an unflattering defense but not enough – unfortunately.

NHL Gambling Trends

• VAN are 2-8 in their last 10 games following a win.
• VAN are 5-16 in their last 21 road games.
• VAN are 2-6 in their last 8 overall.
• Under is 10-3 in CAL last 13 Wed. games.
• Under is 14-5-2 in CAL last 21 vs. Pacific.
• CAL are 12-5 in their last 17 home games.
• Home team is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.
• Over is 9-3-2 in the last 14 meetings in Calgary.

A look at both rosters shows that one team is superior in every aspect of the game. The Canucks should be able to handle to Flames in every aspect of the game Wednesday night. The Canucks have a ton to prove while the Flames have little to prove except for the fact that they can compete every night.
