Free Pick: Montreal Canadiens vs. Toronto Maple Leafs NHL Betting Lines and Preview

The Habs will be eager to get back on the ice after losing in the Eastern Conference Final last year while the Leafs look to gain a little respectability right off the bat.

The Montreal Canadiens let Captain Brian Gionta get away in free agency and they traded Josh Gorges – this team will look a lot different without two guys that logged a lot of minutes for the club. The good news is that defensemen Andrei Markov and P.K. Subban, and forwards Tomas Plekanec and Max Pacioretty still exist – and we can’t forget about Carey Price.

Price has looked good in the preseason – at times he looks like the most dominant keeper in the game who is not prone to the occasional funk. Last year Price was eighth in the NHL with a 2.32 goals-against average. He gave up seven goals in two starts last season against the Leafs.

The big question for the Habs is where are the goals going to come from? This is a team that struggled offensively last year scoring just 2.55 goals per game. Alex Galchenyuk, Brendan Gallagher and PA Parenteau are an OK secondary scoring threat but this team will be heavily reliant on Max Pacioretty.

The Toronto Maple Leafs made an effort to get better defensively this past offseason. Toronto went out and signed Stephane Robidas away from Anaheim and added Roman Polak in a trade with St. Louis. Along with Jake Gardiner who seems prime for a breakout campaign and Dion Phaneuf the Leafs look OK defensively.

Jonathan Bernier should be the man but James Reimer will push him. He had a 2.68 GAA last year while Reimer’s was an unflattering 3.29.

Up front is where the Leafs have a chance to shine. Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk combining for 67 goals and 74 assists last year, Joffrey Lupul is healthy, Nazem Kadri is always dangerous and rookie William Nylander make the Leafs very strong up front.

It is expected that the Leafs will be in a lot of high scoring games again this year and they, on paper, seem well equipped for that sort of game.

• Over is 8-3-2 in MON last 13 vs. Atlantic.
• TOR are 1-8 in their last 9 vs. Atlantic.
• TOR are 3-13 in their last 16 overall.
• Over is 36-14-3 in TOR last 53 vs. Atlantic.

The Leafs and the Canadiens have played on opening night the last five years – Toronto has won four. Expect more of the same. The Leafs firepower will prevail Wednesday night as the Habs adjust to life without two huge cogs. It may take time for Montreal to get going – Toronto takes advantage.
