The St. Louis Blues travel to Madison Square Gardens to take on the Rangers in the only game on the Monday night NHL schedule. Both teams enter Monday night’s game on a roll – the Blues have won four straight games while the Rangers have gone 4-1-1 in their last six overall.

The St. Louis Blues, after a slow start to the season have really picked up their game and are resembling the Western Conference power that most envisioned before the season started. Their four game win streak have come against Chicago, Anaheim, Dallas and Colorado – impressive indeed.

Not surprisingly the Blues have gotten it done with defense so far this season – they have allowed an average of just 1.90 goals per game and have two goaltenders that have a .920 save percentage and goals against averages under 2.00 so far. Brian Elliot has been tabbed to start Monday night – he is 4-2-1 this season with a 1.96 GAA and .919 save percentage.

Offensively St. Louis has been OK – not great yet. The team is averaging 2.40 goals per game and will have to play without Paul Stastny once again Monday although he is close to returning from injury. TJ Oshie, Steve Ott and Patrick Berglund each have just one assist on the season, Max Lapierre has just two helpers and Jay Bouwmeester is pointless so far. Those stats will work themselves out sooner than later for this team – my guess is sooner.

The big story for the New York Rangers ahead of Monday’s contest is the MASH unit that is their defensive corp. Ryan McDonagh and Kevin Klein were the latest casualties – they will join Dan Boyle in the press box along with John Moore who will serve another one of his five game suspension.

Center Derek Stepan has also been ruled out because of injury.

The Rangers defense has been a bit of a disappointment so far this season – they surrender 3.00 goals per game and could be in trouble with the rash of injuries. Henrik Lundqvist will get the night off – Cam Talbot will get the start. He is 0-1-0 with a 2.89 GAA and .886 save percentage this year.

With the defense depleted it looks like it is going to be up to the offense on Monday night – this unit is averaging 2.60 goals per game this season and has been led by the scorching Rick Nash who has 9 goals and 2 assists in 10 games this year. Nash is about the only Ranger that is playing up to expectation however.

Martin St. Louis has just one goal this year and only two Rangers have more than two goals on the season. New York’s power play is operating at 7.1% – 2-for-28 so far.

Expect that trend to continue Monday night. The Rangers defense is just too beat up to expect them to slow down the mighty Blues.

Pick: St. Louis Blues ML

Add in St. Louis’s terrific defensive play in their 10 games and this looks like an easy road win for the Blues.
