Two of the most surprising teams do battle in the NHL’s Western Conference on Saturday night, with both trying to solidify or advance their improbable playoff positions. It is an interesting matchup in which the best players on each team were traded for each other at the trade deadline.
The Colorado Avalanche have been playing just OK lately and appear to have resigned themselves to a playoff position between the fifth and eighth seeds. A 5-4-1 stretch over their past 10 games has almost put them out of touch with Northwest Division leaders Vancouver. Still, the Avs are poised to make the playoffs and exceed any reasonable expectation that they had for themselves before the season started.
Colorado’s last win in regulation came last Tuesday in a game that recent acquisition Peter Meuller continued his torrid Avalanche pace. He had two goals and one assist in that game. Meuller now has 15 points in his last 11 games. Paul Stastny has also been hot, scoring six goals in his last seven games. Other than those two, the Avalanche have been average at best since the Olympic break. They need to get on a run now so as to have a little momentum going into the first round of the playoffs in just over three weeks.
The Phoenix Coyotes are this year’s feel good story and have deserved every one of the 98 points that they have on the season. Back from the brink of bankruptsy, the Desert Dogs have been a factor all season and based on their 8-1-1 streak over their past 10 games, they have served notice that they will be a force in this year’s playoffs. 
Trade deadline acquisition Wojtek Wolski has been a factor on the score sheet in all but two of the Coyotes games since his arrival in Phoenix and Lee Stempniak has ten goals in eleven games since his arrival from Toronto. The Coyotes have been scorching and despite a shootout loss in Nashville the Thursday, the team did show a lot of character by coming back late from a 3-1- deficit to tie the score and force overtime.
This is the most unexpected of marquee matchups that the NHL could have dreamed of. The season series is 2-1 in favor of the Avalanche with the home team winning each game. I like that trend to continue and the Coyotes to improve upon the 20-7 home streak that they are currently on.
