The Top Teams In The NHL

1. Chicago Blackhawks: Bad loss to the Vancouver Canucks, but the Hawks have been very good on the road so far. If goaltending wasn’t an issue, they would be an unquestioned #1.

2. Washington Capitals: Have won 6 straight games, and are 9-1 in their last 10 games. 2nd by a hair.

3. San Jose Sharks: Leading the league in points and boast a lineup that has eight players representing their respective countries in Vancouver.

4. Buffalo Sabres: Great all around team the is in the midst of the difficult Western Road swing. Next week could see the Sabres jump or slide dramatically.

5. New Jersey Devils: Still #4 overall in the standings despite their 5-5 record in their last 10 games. Every team goes through their slumps but good teams rebound. I expect the Devils to do so.

6. Vancouver Canucks: Have beaten Pittsburgh and Chicago convincingly in the last week The Canucks boast the Hottest line in the NHL who seem to score goals in bunches and at the right times.

7. Colorado Avalanche: Ahead of the Canucks in the overall standings, but they lost Milan Hejduk to injury this week. They are still winners of 5 straight games and deserve Top 10 consideration.

8. Pittsburgh Penguins: Marc-Andre Fleury’s will return to action this week making an already great team even better. Malkin appears to have broken from his slump too – SCARY!

9. Phoenix Coyotes: With their 4-5-1 record in their last 10 games, the Coyotes are in danger of falling out of the Top 10. Are the wheels coming off?

10. Ottawa Senators: Goaltender Brian Elliot has won four straight games and the Senators have won six straight overall. The return of Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza from injury is a huge boost to a team that is suddenly a contender in the East.

11. Los Angeles Kings: Anze Kopitar is producing once again, leading the Kings to a 4-1 record over their last 5 games.

12. Nashville Predators: They are only 5-5 in their last 10 games but have remained relatively solid despite a lot of games on the road. This is a good team that is extremely well coached. Expect them to creep into the Top 10 soon.

13. Detroit Red Wings: Haven’t been playing all that well, but they are still the Red Wings!!!

14. Calgary Flames: Captain Jarome Iginla is ice cold and so is Miikka Kiprusoff. 2-7-1 in their last 10 game simply isn’t good enough.

15. New York Islanders: Improving, with every outing. And getting the goaltending that we never thought possible. The Isles are exceeding expectations and are poised to make the playoffs for the first time in a while.

Here’s the also rans…

16. Philadelphia Flyers
17. Anaheim Ducks
18. Montreal Canadiens
19. Boston Bruins
20. New York Rangers
21. Minnesota Wild
22. St. Louis Blues

24. Tampa Bay Lightning

The three best teams in this league are clearly the Sharks, the Blackhawks and the Canucks. Outside the Caps I don’t think there is a serious contender in the East and really those so called “elite” teams in the East (read: Jersey, Buffalo, Pitts) are lucky they predominantly get to play each other all the time.

Canucks in 6th? They’ve beat Washington, Pittsburgh and New Jersey handily this year. Tonight they can make it a sweep of the eastern “elite” if they take out Buffalo.

Caps in the East this year, and you can flip a 3-sided coin in the West.

“I wonder where they’ll be 30 days from now.”

I’m not a fortune teller, but with a 9-1 record this year against the east, I would have to say their chances to grow their lead over the other teams in the west (nw specifically) looks pretty good considering 6 of those road games are played in the east. They only play 9 games in the next 30 days.
