Where Each NHL Team Stands 6 Weeks In

Well, we are getting a good sense of the teams that will be contending right until the end of the 2014-2015 NHL season – there are a lot of typical, predictable teams in the conversation but there are also a few out-of-the-blue surprises climbing up the Ranks.

Where did Calgary come from? Are the Islanders for real? Both make it into this week’s dirty dozen – the question remains whether or not it can last?

So what does it all mean for the bi-weekly edition of the NHL Power Rankings?

Let’s take a look.

1. Montreal Canadiens 14-4-1 (Two Weeks Ago: 6)

The Habs have won six straight games heading into this week and sit atop the NHL Overall standings. Carey Price has rebounded from a slow start and has allowed a total of just five goals in his last four starts and the offense is more than taking care of itself. Montreal has a very tough slate of games on the horizon but right now Montreal looks unstoppable.

2. St. Louis Blues 12-4-1 (Two Weeks Ago: 7)

The Blues are 9-1-0 in their last 10 games – as hot as they come outside of the Habs. Goaltending has been terrific – Jake Allen and Brian Elliot have been superb and the line of Jaden Schwartz, Vladimir Tarasenko and Jori Lehtera has been off the charts.

3. Pittsburgh Penguins 12-3-1 (Two Weeks Ago: 2)

The Pens may have been #1 if not for a 5-0 loss at the Rangers last week. Still, they are 9-1 in their last 10 games overall and are a threat to be in the top spot in two week’s time.

4. Tampa Bay Lightning 13-4-2 (Two Weeks Ago: 5)

The Lightning are another team that is scorching 8-2-1 in their last 11 games. They are the highest scoring team in the NHL so far and goaltender Ben Bishop is 10-2-2 on the year – impressive!

5. Anaheim Ducks 11-4-4 (Two Weeks Ago: 1)

The Ducks have gone just 4-4-2 in their last 10 games but nobody can blame them after a weird infection ravaged the team – Corey Perry and Francois Beauchemin included. After a bout with the mumps both players are back for a team that is somehow still tied for second in the overall standings.

6. Nashville Predators 11-4-2 (Two Weeks Ago: 4)

The Preds have not been great the last couple of weeks – 6-4-0 in their last 10 games but they still sit sixth in the Overall standings. Pekka Rinne has been terrific Filip Forsberg has been sensational and Mike Ribeiro looks like the best free agent steal of the year.

7. Vancouver Canucks 12-6-0 (Two Weeks Ago: 9)

The Canucks have yet to hit the wall that many have predicted for them. They are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games and look like a much different team than last year – it is amazing what a difference a coach makes. Ryan Miller, the Sedins and Alex Burrows are reborn allowing Vancouver to sit in a tie for sixth in the NHL standings.

8. Calgary Flames 11-6-2 (Two Weeks Ago: 12)

The Flames have gone just 6-3-1 in their last 10 games but they are still tied for sixth in the NHL standings. Home again after a long road trip the Flames are a deserving top 10 in the Rankings. Jonas Hiller has been a huge difference maker and Mark Giordano is one of the biggest surprises in the league right now.

9. Boston Bruins 11-8-0 (Two Weeks Ago: 15)

The Bruins have gone 7-3-0 in their last 10 games and have won 10 of their last 15 overall after a slow start. You just can’t keep a quality team down – look for this team to continue to rise up the Rankings. Tuukka Rask is turning a corner and the Bruins look more like the Bruins we have come to admire/hate!

10. New York Islanders 11-6-0 (Two Weeks Ago: 18)

The Islanders have won five of their last six games and although they have their issues still deserve a top 10 spot. The next week will tell a lot about this team – they play Tampa and Pittsburgh.

11. Detroit Red Wings 8-4-5 (Two Weeks Ago: 8)

won six straight games before running into the scorching Canadiens Sunday night. Healthy again the Wings look like a legitimate threat for a playoff spot in the East… again.

12. San Jose Sharks 10-8-2 (Two Weeks Ago: 13)

Have fallen off a tad but are in the midst of a ridiculously lone road trip right now. They are 5-4-1 in their last 10 games overall and barely crack the dirty dozen this week.

13. Minnesota Wild 10-7-0 (Two Weeks Ago: 3)
14. Chicago Blackhawks 10-7-1 (Two Weeks Ago: 10)
15. Los Angeles Kings 9-5-4 (Two Weeks Ago: 11)
16. Dallas Stars 6-8-4 (Two Weeks Ago: 17)
17. Winnipeg Jets 9-7-3 (Two Weeks Ago: 23)
18. Ottawa Senators 8-5-4 (Two Weeks Ago: 9)
19. Washington Capitals 7-7-3 (Two Weeks Ago: 22)
20. Philadelphia Flyers 7-7-2 (Two Weeks Ago: 25)
