Cappers NHL Picks: NHL January 13th 2015 Power Rankings

Where Each NHL Team Stands 14 Weeks In

It’s been two weeks since we updated the Rankings – a new team has emerged at the top of the heap and two more teams have climbed onto the top 5. Some quality teams have also slid down the Rankings and should realistically be higher.

With the All-Star break just around the corner, where does you favorite team lay in the bi-weekly edition of the NHL Power Rankings? Let’s take a look.

1. Nashville Predators 28-9-4 (Two Weeks Ago: 4) – Guess who leads the NHL Overall standings? That’s right – the Preds after going 7-1-2 in their last 10 games (3 straight wins)! A new culture under a new coach, stellar goalkeeping by Vezina favorite Pekka Rinne and improved offense thanks to rookie Filip Forsberg have the Preds looking for real!

2. Tampa Bay Lightning 27-12-4 (Two Weeks Ago: 6) – The Lightning have gone 7-2-1 in their last 10 games and have beaten some top dogs lately – including the Habs at the Bell Center. They enter this week on a three game win streak and have the best offense in the game – 140 goals for so far.

3. Anaheim Ducks 27-10-6 (Two Weeks Ago: 2) – The Ducks have gone 6-3-1in their last 10 games overall and beat the Jets last night in a thriller. They are now tied for top spot in the overall standings and are finally healthy. Anaheim has been through a ton this season but remain elite.

4. New York Islanders 28-13-1 (Two Weeks Ago: 5) – The Islanders head into this week leading the Metropolitan Division by one point over the Penguins. A West Coast road trip slowed them a little but the Isles are still 6-3-1 in their last 10 games overall. They have scored 131 goals (third best in the NHL) and are still getting quality goaltending from Jaroslav Halak.

5. New York Rangers 24-11-4 (Two Weeks Ago: 10) – The Rangers are the hottest team in the NHL – they ate up the California teams last week – not an easy thing to do! They are 9-1-0 in their last 10 games and have won five straight. It’s good to be a hockey fan in New York!

6. Chicago Blackhawks 28-13-2 (Two Weeks Ago: 1) – The Hawks haven’t been great the last couple of weeks – THEY LOST TO THE OILERS for crying out loud! A win on Sunday night against the Wild will hopefully snap them out of their funk – they are too good to look so average!

7. Pittsburgh Penguins 25-10-6 (Two Weeks Ago: 3) – The Penguins pulled one out in Overtime against the Habs on Saturday night but are just 4-4-2 in their last 10 games overall. There seems to be no excuse – this team is absolutely loaded!

8. St. Louis Blues 26-13-3 (Two Weeks Ago: 8) – The Blues had been in a slump before winning four straight games. Still, they are just 5-4-1 in their last 10 games overall and like the Pens are a much better team than their recent record suggests.

9. Montreal Canadiens 26-12-3 (Two Weeks Ago: 9) – The Habs had won five straight games before losing their last two. They are Canada’s best team by a mile and with Carey Price will likely be in the Cup conversation all year. Question – how does PK Subban not make the All-Star team?

10. Detroit Red Wings 22-11-9 (Two Weeks Ago: 7) – the Wings are 5-4-1 in their last 10 games and were handed some bad news Saturday night – Jimmy Howard will be out for the foreseeable future with a groin injury. It’s a big blow for a team barely clinging to a top 10 spot in the Rankings.

11. Washington Capitals 22-11-8 (Two Weeks Ago: 16) – the Capitals have risen from the dead and now sit in 11th place in the overall standings. A 7-1-2 record in their last 10 games overall has them knocking on the door of a top 10 spot. Gotta love what Barry Trotz has done for this team!

12. Boston Bruins 22-15-6 (Two Weeks Ago: 21) – There’s been a Boston Bruins sighting! They have gone 6-1-3 in their last 10 games – maybe their CEO should have ripped them earlier in the season!

13. Vancouver Canucks 23-14-3 (Two Weeks Ago: 15)
14. Florida Panthers 20-11-9 (Two Weeks Ago: 18)
15. Winnipeg Jets 21-14-8 (Two Weeks Ago: 13)
16. San Jose Sharks 22-16-5 (Two Weeks Ago: 12)
17. Los Angeles Kings 19-13-10 (Two Weeks Ago: 11)
18. Toronto Maple 22-17-3 (Two Weeks Ago: 14)
19. Colorado Avalanche 18-16-8 (Two Weeks Ago: 25)
20. Calgary Flames 22-18-2 (Two Weeks Ago: 17)
21. Dallas Stars 18-16-7 (Two Weeks Ago: 20)
22. Columbus Blue Jackets 18-19-3 (Two Weeks Ago: 24)
23. Ottawa Senators 17-16-8 (Two Weeks Ago: 23)
24. Philadelphia Flyers 16-19-7 (Two Weeks Ago: 22)
25. Minnesota Wild 18-18-5 (Two Weeks Ago: 19)
26. Arizona Coyotes 16-21-4 (Two Weeks Ago: 27)
27. New Jersey Devils 15-21-8 (Two Weeks Ago: 28)
28. Carolina Hurricanes 13-24-5(Two Weeks Ago: 29)
29. Buffalo Sabres 14-26-3 (Two Weeks Ago: 26)
30. Edmonton Oilers 10-24-9 (Two Weeks Ago: 30)
