Time for some fireworks. We can expect some highlight-reel goals when the NHL’s top two offenses meet for a rare cross-conference matchup at the HP Pavilion tonight. San Jose’s five-game losing streak earlier this month is a distant memory, as the Sharks have now won five straight games. Joe Thornton continues to rack up crazy points and remains atop the NHL scoring race. He joins Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau on what has been hockey’s best line this season. Considering that the Sharks also have the clear goaltending advantage in Evgeni Nabokov over Jose Theodore, they seem like a logical NHL betting choice.
But that doesn’t mean you should pick them. The high-octane Caps have established themselves as a big-game team. They marched into Philadelphia and won 8-2 earlier this month. They trounced the Avalanche 6-1 in Colorado. They even beat the Devils handily last week.
We can never underestimate the Ovechkin factor, either. Alex has more road goals than away goals this season and for his entire career. He loves to enter a hostile environment and announce his presence to the world. Don’t be surprised if he does so again tonight and lights up his countryman Nabokov with a goal…or three. Go with the upset.
