ATS Matchup Insight | CappersPicks Insider Preview

The Ducks have ridden the hot play of a rookie goaltender in the last two games – John Gibson has been the true difference maker that the Ducks were searching for. The Kings have been the better of the two teams in their last two losses – a little puck luck and they could be up in the series.

John Gibson has been sensational between the pipes for the Anaheim Ducks – he has the demeanor of a chiseled veteran – not a youngster that has a total of five NHL starts. He has stopped 67 of 70 shots directed his way in two starts, has given up three two goals and he may have gotten in the heads of the Los Angeles Kings who must dig deep to find a way to beat this guy!

The Ducks got goals from three lines and points from 11 players Monday. Devante Smith-Pelly had two goals in the win – he now has five goals in his past six games while Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry continue to be terrific – the most dominant forwards in the series so far. Anaheim has scored nine goals in their three wins – they scored just three goals in their two losses in the series.

Anaheim’s power play has also turned it around and is providing a spark. The Ducks have scored four goals in the past three games with the man advantage – taking advantage of the opportunities given to them.

The Los Angeles Kings have already had a three game losing streak in the playoffs and we all know what happened after that – a six game win streak in which they looked like they would never lose again. The Kings perhaps deserve a better fate than a 3-2 series hole but find themselves having to climb out of a hole just to get to a Game 7.

LAS’s losing streak has corresponded with the loss of Willie Mitchell and Robyn Regehr to injury. They eat up a lot of minutes and play a big role on a penalty killing unit that has been a bit of an Achilles Heel in their absence. Jonathan Quick has been uncharacteristically poor as well – he is 0-2-0 with a 4.65 GAA and .829 save percentage in his last two starts.

Marian Gaborik has five goals in his past five games and leads the NHL with eight. He and the LA offense looked fine on Monday – they scored three goals and generated a ton of chances that Gibson foiled.

Drew Doughty is pointless in four games, Slava Voynov Pointless in eight, Tyler Toffoli hasn’t hit the score sheet in three games and Jake Muzzin has just one point in the series so far. These guys need to get going or LA is going home.

A few trends to consider:
• ANA are 25-9 in their last 34 vs. Pacific.
• ANA are 20-8 in their last 28 road games.
• ANA are 43-20 in their last 63 overall.
• LA are 21-7 in their last 28 Wed. games.
• Under is 20-8-7 in LA last 35 home games.
• Over is 5-2-2 in LA last 9 Wed. games.
• Road team is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.
• ANA are 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.

The Los Angeles Kings have been the better team in four of the five games of the series and they find themselves behind in the series. The Hockey Gods aren’t sleeping – they will do what is right Wednesday night. Most of us called a seven game series before it started – no reason to think that the Kings don’t do their part.

Pick: Los Angeles Kings -141
