NHL news: Sharks retain Marleau, Pavelski; Thrashers hire Craig Ramsay as head coach

Cross one more name off the list of prominent unrestricted free agents for the 2010 offseason. Patrick Marleau is staying with the San Jose Sharks. He signed a four year, $27.6-million deal that is deemed quite reasonable by anyone critiquing the trade, especially because of its relatively short term.

Marleau notched 44 goals last year but his biggest strides came in the playoffs, when he finally stepped up his game and scored eight goals – including five during the Sharks’ loss to Chicago in the Western Conference Final.

Another man who stepped up hugely for the Sharks in the playoffs, Joe Pavelski, re-signed with a four year deal of his own. He’s posted back to back 25-goal seasons as San Jose’ second-line center.

Craig Ramsay is an NHL head coach again after 10 years. He had a brief cup of coffee as an interim head coach with the Flyers in 2000 but hadn’t coached as the prime bench boss since then. He was quite successful as an assistant, however, winning a Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2004 and working with some strong Boston Bruins teams over the last three years.

Ramsay played 14 seasons with the Buffalo Sabres from 1971-85, finishing as a player-coach.
