Week 9 NFL Lines: Texans vs. Colts

Point spread, ATS odds, and moneyline betting and preview article for the 2009 Sunday Football Week 9 NFL clash between the Houston Texans vs. Indianapolis Colts…

Sunday NFL Betting – Texans Still Not Ready To Upend Colts

The Houston Texans have never defeated the Indianapolis Colts in the history of their franchise and while they have played good football over the last month, the Colts still present a tough matchup for them.

The Texans have a couple of things just don’t work for them against the Colts: they don’t have much of a pass rush and they don’t have much of a pass defense.

On the year, the Texans have just 11 sacks, which is the third-fewest in the NFL. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is tough enough to sack by some of the best defenses in the NFL so one of the worst isn’t going to have much of a shot.

On top of that, the Colts are still perfect while the Texans have been inconsistent this year. This is still a matchup of the big brother and the litter brother in the AFC South and Junior just isn’t ready for the upset yet.

Texans offense versus Colts defense

On one hand, the Texans offense catches a break now that the Colts will be without safety Bob Sanders for this contest but on the other hand, their main option in the middle of the field will also be out for this game and the rest of the season. The loss of tight end Owen Daniels will be huge for the Texans as he not only is a safety valve for Matt Schaub, he also leads the team in catches for a first down.

In the backfield, the Texans have a bit of a conundrum with Steve Slaton, Ryan Moats and even Chris Brown. Regardless of who is the starter, the Texans need to run the ball well and keep the Colts offense on the sidelines. That is their best shot at a win.

Colts offense versus Texans defense

As mentioned before, the Texans simply don’t pressure opposing quarterbacks. On top of that, a couple of their key helpers in that category – Brian Cushing and Mario Williams – are a little beat up for this contest.
Those are not good signs when you are set to face Peyton Manning.

The Colts may not run the ball particularly well but they throw it better than almost anyone in the league. That’s going to be the story of the game as Manning stands in the pocket all day long and makes plays. The Texans really don’t have the cover corners to slow down any of the Colts wideouts and that will be evident on Sunday.

Outlook & Pick
Both teams have good offenses and suspect defenses, so really, what’s the difference between them? Execution. The Colts are one of the best while the Texans – as evident in their two losses to Arizona and Jacksonville – are not there yet.

On top of that, the Texans have no pass rush while the Colts have Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.

Those factors combined should lead to another Colts win and cover in this series.

Pick: Colts -9
