Jake Delhomme is having a nightmare season, which has dragged down the Carolina Panthers in the NFC South and the NFL sportsbook (with a 1-5 ATS record). He has four touchdown passes and 13 interceptions, losing a fumble to boot, and when you count the last time he faced off against the Arizona Cardinals, which was in last season’s playoffs at Charlotte, in which he turned the ball over six times, that makes 20 giveaways on his part in the last seven games. Coach John Fox is sticking with his man, however, resisting the temptation to go with Matt Moore or AJ Feeley.

After pulling off back-to-back wins over non-offensive teams (Washington and Tampa Bay) and a loss to another club with trouble moving the ball (Buffalo), the Panthers’ yards-per-point figure is at 19.9. That means they have had to gain twenty yards for every point they have scored. When your opponents’ yards-per-point is 11.7, that is no way to win games in the NFL sportsbook arena.

We will concede that Carolina has a better running game than Arizona. When you have a 1-2 punch like DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, that is usually going to be the case. However, Arizona has a running game that might see better days with the talented Beanie Wells, who had 67 yards and a touchdown last week. The Panthers can’t be altogether depressed about the defense the last three weeks, allowing a total of 359 passing yards. There is no doubt that Kurt Warner is more capable than Jason Campbell, Josh Johnson and Ryan Fitzpatrick, although he is projected to fall short of his stellar 2008 numbers.

If you wanted to point out the most impressive stuff about the Cards, it might be on the defensive side, because that’s how they have won the last two games against Seattle and the Giants, and how they held on to victory over Houston three weeks ago. Arizona’s defensive front has shown a lot more strength this season, surrendering only three yards a carry. Consider this NFL sportsbook trend as well – they have been leaning “under” lately, with five of their last six games going that way. Sure, they still love to pass, but that doesn’t necessarily mean everything is a shootout.

We are going to look for a game where perhaps Carolina sees its offense stymied, with its strength minimized, and for Arizona to chew more clock than they might normally. That means “under” in the BetUS NFL sportsbook odds.
