Young Guns: Can Smith & Crabtree Be The Difference Against Indianapolis?
The San Francisco 49ers have re-inserted Alex Smith as their quarterback, and the former first overall pick is making a strong case that he deserved it all along. I’m still a huge fan of Shaun Hill because, let’s face it – he just wins.

But Smith has the potential and a bigger arm that Hill will ever have. With three touchdown passes in the second half last week, the Niners have a chance to really take it to an undefeated Indy team playing at home.
The Niners are 4-1-1 ATS this season and are a strong road team against the NFL betting line. They also have two viable receiving threats in Crabtree and Vernon Davis. I know they aren’t the most reliable locker room guys, but as far as proving they’re worth the pay check is a big motivator for guys like this. Will it be enough against Peyton Manning?
San Francisco 49ers (3-3) vs. Indianapolis Colts (6-0)
Sunday, November 1st — Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis — 1:00pm EST
NFL Betting Line: Indianapolis -12 (45)
Peyton Manning is the league MVP. There’s no denying that. And he’ll take apart a Niners secondary that gives up 236.0 yards per game. But the kicker here is that Alex Smith, Vernon Davis and Crabtree have too much to prove to let this game slip away. A double-digit spread is going to be a tough battle for the Colts and the Niners have proven to be resilient on the road when they’re not trying to prove things to their feverish home crowd.
Though Indy is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall, they’re just 4-8 ATS at home. That spread terrifies me, so I’m taking the points and holding this game in the UNDER.
Free Pick: San Francisco +12 (UNDER)
