Sunday Night Football – Cardinals In Tough Versus Giants

The Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants are heading into their Sunday Night Football contest in very different moods.

The Cardinals are flying high after an impressive win at Qwest Field where, for a second year in a row, they stomped the Seattle Seahawks.

On the other hands, the New York Giants are in a bit of a sour mood. The Giants faced the New Orleans Saints in a matchup of undefeated teams last week to decide who was the best team in the NFC. Clearly, after an undisciplined effort that led to a blowout, the Giants have work to do.

Cardinals offense vs Giants defense

This is an interesting matchup. On one hand, you might think that since the New Orleans Saints – a passing-oriented team – had so much success against the Giants secondary last week that the Cardinals, also a pass-first team, would have equal success. That won’t be the case.

Last week, the Saints schooled the Giants in a calm dome setting. This week, the Cardinals have to play in the windy Meadowlands.

If you recall, the Cardinals played in this stadium last year when they faced the New York Jets and the result wasn’t pretty. The Cards made plenty of mistakes and were blown out 56-35.

The problem for Arizona is that they rank dead last in rushing yards per attempt (2.9) and rushing attempts per game (19.8). That shows that they can’t run the ball and that they don’t even try to. That will be a problem this week.

Giants offense vs Cardinals defense

The Cardinals run defense has been good but their secondary has been very hit or miss. You can expect that Eli Manning – and the entire offense – will look much sharper this weekend.

The Giants have a big, road-grading offensive line and you can expect them to pave the way this week. In the past couple of games, the Giants have gotten away from their big bruising back Brandon Jacobs but this will be the ideal time to reintroduce him.

The Cardinals are a warm-weather team and facing a 265-pound power back is not something they’ll be looking forward to on a chilly autumn night.

Outlook & Pick

The spread is high on this game almost begs you to take the Cardinals given how well they played last week. Not so fast my friends, as Lee Corso would say.

The Cardinals are playing their second of back-to-back road games and they also won the first game. It’s a long two weeks of traveling for them going from Arizona, to Seattle on the West Coast, back home, then to New York on the East Coast.

Furthermore, the Cardinals are not a team that fares well in the Eastern time zone. Even though the game will be later in the day on Sunday night, look for the Giants to get a big win and get back on track.

Pick: Giants -7

One reply on “Week 7 NFL Lines: Cardinals vs. Giants”

The Giants will look to rebound from last week’s embarrassment against the Saints, but the Cardinals will make it harder than you think. I would take Arizona and the points as they will keep it close.
