Week 6 NFL Lines: Bears vs. Falcons

Point spread, ATS odds, and moneyline betting and preview article for the 2009 Sunday Night Football Week 6 NFL clash between the Chicago Bears and the Atlanta Falcons…

Sunday Night Football – Falcons Ready To Make National Statement

The Atlanta Falcons have been overshadowed in their own division and in their own conference but on Sunday Night Football this week, they have a chance to make a statement. With a quality opponent in town, an impressive win in front of a national audience would go a long way from changing the Falcons from a sleeper to a serious contender.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears have morphed into a very different team this year. As they watch their former castoffs like Kyle Orton and Cedric Benson make very positive impressions in the AFC, their own team has looked good under Jay Cutler. The Bears are now an offensive squad, believe it or not, and their defense has been doing just enough to limit their opponents.
This has the feeling of a first-round NFC playoff matchup as both teams are jockeying for position in what is a crowded ladder in the NFC.

Bears offense vs Falcons defense

Both the Bears offense and Falcons defense are improving on a weekly basis.
Thanks to Cutler, the Bears are never out of any game but their offense still doesn’t have the feel of a lethal unit. The receiving corps is suspect, the offensive line doesn’t play consistently and the running game has yet to fully explode.

But the Bears still continue to improve weekly. There were rumors that the Bears might be acquiring Terrell Owens this week but that did not come to fruition.
The Bears have looked sluggish in their two road games this year, barely edging out a Matt Hasselbeck-less Seattle Seahawks team and losing to division rival Green Bay. They’ll have to have a complete effort to get the win in the Georgia Dome.

Falcons offense vs Bears defense

Very quietly, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has turned into one of the best in the business. It’s still somewhat hard to believe that this is just his second season but with a Peyton Manning-like work ethic, he has developed into one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Ryan has seven touchdowns, two interceptions and a quarterback rating of 102.9. He’s completed 66.6% of his passes this year.

Good luck stopping this offense when Ryan is on, Tony Gonzalez is tearing up the interior of the secondary and speedy wideout Roddy White is stretching defenses. Throw in Michael Turner’s power running and Jerious Norwood’s shiftiness and you get a very good, complete offense.

The Bears are banged up at linebacker and that’s going to be a problem. Turner should be able to run but it should also mean that Gonzalez will be open frequently. Expect the Falcons to take advantage.

Outlook & Pick
For a second year in a row, the Bears travel to the Georgia Dome and while they would like to exact revenge for last year’s loss, it’s unlikely. The Falcons are hot right now and their offense is going to be a load to handle for a banged up Bears squad. Beyond that, the Falcons defense will key in on Matt Forte and force the Bears to win through the air. This is a coming out party game for Atlanta and they will win handily.

Pick: Falcons -3.5
