Week 4 NFL Lines: Chargers vs. Steelers

Point spread, ATS odds, and moneyline betting and preview article for the 2009 Sunday Night Football Week 4 NFL clash between the San Diego Chargers and the Pittsburgh Steelers…

Sunday Night Football – Steelers More Desperate For A Win

The San Diego Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers, two teams that were supposed to be AFC contenders, have stumbled out of the gates early in the season and a lot of people now have some questions about the supposed power houses.

For starters, both teams are without key Pro Bowl caliber defenders and the losses have been evident early on.

The Steelers, who are without safety Troy Polamalu for the foreseeable future, are now 0-2 without Mr. Head & Shoulders in the lineup. Meanwhile, the Chargers are without their stout nose tackle Jamal Williams and that has left their run defense fairly weak.

The Steelers need this game and at Heinz Field, they won’t slip up.

Chargers Offense vs Steelers Defense

The Chargers should get LaDainian Tomlinson back for this contest and although it’s surprising to say it, he might actually hurt the team. Tomlinson has clearly lost a step and against a ferocious Steelers front seven, Tomlinson isn’t going to find any room running into the teeth of that defense.

Regardless, the Chargers game plan will be to move the ball through the air. The Chargers have multiple weapons in the passing game that make them very dangerous, including wideouts Vincent Jackson and Malcolm Floyd, and tight end Antonio Gates.

It could be a good strategy as the Cincinnati Bengals found plenty of success through the air against Pittsburgh last week but it could also backfire if that dangerous Steelers linebacking corps gets to pin their ears back and rush.

Steelers Offense vs Chargers Defense

The Steelers haven’t been able to get their running game going so far this year, which is part of why they haven’t been able to control the game in either of their losses. But against the Chargers, there are some signs that they might be able to run.

San Diego is giving up 142.3 rushing yards per game on the ground. So far this season, they have given up 29 first downs on running plays, which shows that teams can pick up tough yards against them.

Passing-wise, the Steelers should also have success. The Chargers pass rush has been non-existent, notching just three sacks to this point. They are getting no push up front and that’s been blatantly evident. When you account for the fact that the Chargers are without Williams, lost end Igor Olshansky to free agency in the offseason and don’t have a healthy Shawne Merriman, that smothering defense from two years ago just isn’t the same. Their unit has turned soft.

Outlook & Pick
San Diego is in a really tough spot in this game. They have to travel through three time zones to face the Super Bowl Champs, who are desperate for a win. On top of that, the Chargers have never won in Pittsburgh.

Furthermore, their defense just isn’t that good anymore. The Steelers will dominate the line of scrimmage and get the important win.

Pick: Pittsburgh -7
