There is certainly a lot of work to do in Detroit. Coach Jim Schwartz has decided to let the Lions go through the growing pains with rookie Matthew Stafford at quarterback. Stafford is getting plenty of on-the-job training, although he has been far from an efficient QB, with just one TD pass to go with five interceptions, and less than 51% completions.

His learning process will continue on Sunday, as he stands across from Albert Haynesworth, the new Redskin acquisition can rush the passer as well as stuff the run. However, all this has not yet manifested itself in sacks, as Washington has a total of two in two games.

Detroit has allowed 72 points in two games thus far, but they have had the misfortune of drawing Drew Brees and Brett Favre-led teams as they try to end their long losing streak.

They’re not going to see anything like that this week when they line up against Jason Campbell, who can complete a high percentage of passes in Jim Zorn’s West Coast offense (69% so far) but does not convert that into very much. What the ‘Skins have to do is try and get Clinton Portis a little more involved in the offense; he has 141 yards in the two games.

The Lions were able to mix it up a little against a Minnesota defense that allowed less on the ground than anyone last year. Detroit gained 129 yards, and that offered at least a little encouragement.

They’re also going to rotate it around to Bryant Johnson and tight end Brandon Pettigrew, as well as running back Kevin Smith, so as to take some of the pressure off superstar Calvin Johnson (141 yards on eight catches thus far).

Look, you don’t lose 19 games in a row by doing a lot of things right. The Lions are going to have to fulfill what coach Jim Schwartz and defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham want them to do. Of course, Schwartz probably knows how to deal with Haynesworth, since he was his defensive coordinator last year. Also, Stafford can not self-destruct.

But let’s consider the fact that the Redskins are not a team that generally leaves a lot of margin for error. In their last ten games, they have scored more than 20 points only once, and that is hazardous when you are laying six points on the road.

I am not sure that Campbell can direct a team to many scores, but then, that’s the way I have felt all along. This gives the Lions to stay within striking distance, and so we’re taking the six points as posted in the BetUS NFL pro football betting odds.

This is a good chance for the Lions to finally end their brutal losing streak. They have to play mistake free ball and get a lead that they hold onto and they have a good chance. Washington’s offense just seems to shut down once they reach the red zone.
