Last week, both of these teams were tight late with low-level opponents. The Ravens, who had gotten off to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter but were tied at 24 with Kansas City until scoring two touchdowns in the last two minutes and six seconds. San Diego looked flat and was behind at Oakland 17-13 before scoring a touchdown in the closing moments.

The difference between the teams is that while Baltimore dominated Kansas City on the stat sheet, San Diego was outplayed by the Raiders. Baltimore had 32 first downs to eleven for Oakland, had a 501-188 yardage edge, limiting the Chiefs to 20 minutes of possession time and 29 yards rushing. The Chiefs simply benefited from a long interception of a Joe Flacco pass and a blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone. Flacco had 307 yards passing and coach John Harbaugh let him air it out 43 times, which may have been appropriate since Kansas City’s secondary is, at best, a work in progress.

San Diego , on the other hand, really struggled to get some offense going against a Raider defense that beat them to the punch most of the time. Phillip Rivers threw for 252 yards, but the Chargers were outgained 148-77 on the ground. The defense permitted Oakland to convert on seven of its 14 third down situations.

A lot of people have the Chargers pegged for major success in the AFC this season, primarily because they figure to have an easier time winning their division than anyone else. Admittedly the competition in the AFC West is not heavy, but maybe things will wind up being tougher than usual for San Diego to repeat as division champs.

I see trouble signs for the Chargers. For one thing, the offensive line is in tatters and that is not where you want to be when going up against a Raven defense that surrendered less per carry last year than anyone, and held Larry Johnson to 20 yards on eleven carries in the opener. Rookies Brandyn Dombrowski and Scott Mruczkowski had to step in for the injured Nick Hardwick and Louis Vasquez, and may have to yet again.

I am not impressed with the way LaDanian Tomlinson, who had 55 yards rushing and fumbled on one carry, gets away with dogging his way out of games. If he has a hangnail, forget about him. Darren Sproles can fill in, but against Baltimore, he can’t run between the tackles on a consistent basis. The Chargers lacked spark against Oakland, and have often been caught getting off to slow starts before coming on later in the year. The secondary has shown that it can be burned for big plays. The Ravens will keep this defense honest, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the three-headed running game (led by Ray Rice, who had 108 yards in the opener) made some real advances.

You can give me the more fundamentally-sound Ravens, the three-point underdog in the BetUS NFL pro football betting odds.
