It’s an early statement game in the NFC East as both teams are considered contenders and maybe even more so now that the Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback Donovan McNabb has a rib injury.

The Cowboys are at home in this contest and if they want to be taken seriously, they can’t lose to division mates on their own turf. Knowing the importance of this game, look for them to piece together a very good performance against the Giants.

Giants offense vs Cowboys defense

The Cowboys defense gave up 450 yards of offense last week, 174 of which were on the ground, and the tandem of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw should be licking their chops. But given how badly the Cowboys were gashed last week, you would have to imagine that they work on that area a little more.

If they don’t, the Giants are going to run wild on them. They have one of the better offensive lines in the league and they have two very different backs that cause very different headaches.

Once the running game is flowing, Eli Manning should have an easy time moving the chains with his marginal wideouts.

Cowboys offense vs Giants defense

The Giants defense had a pretty good game last week but that was against the toothless Washington Redskins. Against the Cowboys, they could have a lot of problems.

Quarterback Tony Romo – and the Cowboys offense – had huge days in the opener against Tampa Bay. Romo threw for a career-high 353 yards.

The subtraction of Terrell Owens has actually opened up the eyes of coordinator Jason Garrett to see how many weapons this offense truly has. How was the passing game without Owens, you ask? The Cowboys had four passes of 40+ yards last week.

On top of that, the Cowboys are getting everyone involved, which is going to create some nightmares for opposing defensive coordinators.

Last week, the Cowboys used two-tight end sets with their dangerous tandem of Jason Witten and Martellus Bennnett, they ran the Wildcat, they used three different running backs and they stacked one side of their offensive line on a few plays as well. Given the amount of weapons they have, opposing defense will have to do their homework.

Now we’ll truly find out if the Giants miss Steve Spagnuolo.

Outlook & Pick

The Giants get love from the sportsbook odds makers than the Cowboys do in the East but that should change after Sunday.

Look for the Cowboys to clamp down on the Giants running game and really leave them no options except to pass. Last week, the Giants only touchdown came on defense and since the wheels sputtered so much on offense, it allowed the Redskins to stay in the game.

The Cowboys offense is far more competent and at home, they should be ready to put on a show.

Pick: Cowboys -3
