NFL Football Week Two Wagering – Fish at Cards

The Miami Dolphins (0-1 SU & ATS), who won just one game last year, got close but didn’t quite make it in their season opener. Now they take to the road against the Arizona Cardinals (1-0 SU & ATS), who were energized by a strong opening-game performance, in an NFL inter-conference game that is set to take place at 4:15 PM ET at University of Phoenix Stadium (natural turf) in Glendale, AZ.

Here are some NFL football betting trends as they relate to this matchup (reflecting numbers going into the 2008 season):

* MIA is 5-10-2 in its last 17 games
* MIA has lost 19 of its last 20 games SU
* MIA has played four of its last six games OVER the total
* MIA has lost its last ten road games SU
* MIA has played four of its last six road games UNDER the total
* ARIZ has won four of its last six games SU
* ARIZ has played four of its last five games OVER the total

* ARIZ has played four of its last five home games OVER the total

There are some positive things one can derive out of Miami’s 20-14 loss to the Jets on the opening weekend. The Dolphins appeared to move with some confidence behind the leadership of new quarterback Chad Pennington, who nearly led them to a score in the final seconds to pull out a win. Brett Favre threw a mid-range Hail Mary for a Jets TD on a fourth down play, and so the general feeling is that this is a game that should have been won by a Miami team that was 1-15 last season.

Of course, Pennington was his normal dinking and dunking self, throwing 43 times with an average gain of just 5.3 yards a pass. And those with memories longer than eleven months will recall that Miami went into last season with a veteran quarterback (Trent Green) and it still didn’t mean any victories.

The bad news for the Dolphins was that Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams ran for a combined 47 yards on 16 carries, as the offensive line is not only a work in progress, but a work that is constantly changing. Rookie Donald Thomas, who was starting at one of the guard positions, is out for the season and the staff is scrambling players around the come up with the right combination.

The Cards totaled just 285 yards of offense against San Francisco last weekend, but Miami has a young, untested defensive backfield, and that does not make for a very profitable matchup against Arizona’s receiving duo of Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, as well as Michigan grad Steve Breaston, who is a capable replacement for Bryant Johnson in the three-wide sets. The big bonus may be the play of Edgerrin James, who carried it 25 times for 100 yards, keyed a Cards attack that held the ball for 37 minutes.

No, we’re not conditioning ourselves to drink the Arizona Kool-Aid (although Arizona Iced Tea is worth a thought). But we’re willing to pay a price as we wait for Miami, which has lost 19 of its last 20 and ten straight on the road, can come up with the winning points after traveling cross-country. Kurt Warner will make more plays than Pennington. Let’s lay the points with the Cardinals, the 6.5-point favorite in the BetUS NFL football betting odds.

Miami is 2-12 ATS in the first half of the season over the last 3 seasons, 0-7 ATS in the first month of the season over the last 3 seasons, and 0-6 ATS after a loss by 6 or less points over the last 2 seasons. The Cards have home field and a talented offense on its side in this one and that means bad news for the Phins. The Cardinals are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games in September and we’ll take them here as they keep this trend alive.
