The Jets are going so bad right now that they managed to gain just 265 yards in last week’s pitiful loss at Seattle. Brett Favre, who’s been intercepted 19 times this season, was just 18 for 31 and suffered four sacks.

Thomas Jones, who has a total of 1289 yards and a Pro Bowl invite, has only 201 yards in the last three weeks. This team has lost three of its last four games, with the only win coming in a very narrow escape where J.P. Losman of Buffalo practically gave the game away. The Jets have steered themselves into a position where they might not make the playoffs even if they do win here.

For the Miami Dolphins, however, it’s “win and IN.” Miami, which won just one game last year, find itself on a torrid streak where it has won eight of its last nine games to give coach Tony Sporano the biggest turnaround of the year. Everyone has chipped in; Chad Pennington has completed 67% of his passes since coming over on waivers, with 17 TD’s and seven interceptions. Ronnie Brown is going to the Pro Bowl not only on the strength of 859 yards rushing, but also piloting the “Wildcat” package that breathed new life into the Dolphin offense. Ricky Williams (609 yards) has been one of the better comeback stories in quite a while. The receiving corps has been boosted by first-rounder Ted Ginn, breaking out with 54 receptions, and Davone Bass, an undrafted free agent from Hawai’i who has snagged 48 passes. Joey Porter is once again a dominant figure with his 17.5 sacks. Miami is “winning ugly,” although in the standings, it looks pretty.

The back story surrounding Favre and Pennington will be beaten to death by game time, for sure, so we will not indulge in it here. In the earlier meeting of these teams, Favre benefited from a couple of lucky plays, including a “Hail Mary” type fourth-down pass in the first half, that ultimately led to a Jets victory. Pennington had the Fins down in the red zone at game’s end, ready to complete the winning touchdown drive, but he was intercepted in the end zone.

At the time, it seemed like fate, and that segues us into an operative handicapping element here – the recent history between these clubs. The Jets just don’t falter against this team, and in the last ten meetings, New York has registered a 9-0-1 pointspread record. Pennington won’t be affected by the possible wind condition in Giants Stadium, since he’s been there countless times before. But Mangini’s team, on the basis of the personnel itself, should be able to compete on even terms and then some. Despite the corner it has painted itself into, we see a maximum effort from the Jets here, and that, along with the inability of Miami to get over the hump against them, no matter who the head coach is, have to be factors.

We’ll lay the points with the Jets, the 2.5-point favorite in the BetUS Sportsbook NFL pro football betting odds.
