Week 17 NFL Lines: Chiefs vs. Broncos

Point spread, ATS odds, and moneyline betting and preview article for the 2009 Sunday Football Week 17 NFL clash between the K.C. Chiefs and the Denver Broncos…

Sunday NFL Betting –  Can The Broncos Lose To The Chiefs?

The Denver Broncos fired coach Mike Shanahan last year when the team lost its final four games, blew a division lead and missed the playoffs. Just one year later under a new coach and a new regime, the Broncos are poised to do the same.

That Broncos team that surprised the NFL and started 6-0 has won just two of its last nine games and need to win at home on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs and get some help to qualify for the playoffs.

Fueling the fire has been a midweek suspension of star wideout Brandon Marshall, who has been the entire offense in recent weeks. Considering the Broncos lost at home to the Oakland Raiders two weeks ago, anything is possible.

Chiefs offense versus Broncos Defense

One reason that the Chiefs have a decent shot at winning this game is because they have the game film from that Raiders win two weeks ago.

The hapless Raiders used their second, third and fourth string quarterbacks against the Broncos and ran for 191 yards on 34 carries (5.6 yards per carry).

The Chiefs offense is limited but one bright spot is running back Jamaal Charles. Next to Chris Johnson, nobody has rushed for more yards in the NFL since Charles became a starter. If he can get going and take some pressure off of Cassel, the Chiefs will have a shot.

Broncos offense versus Chiefs defense

The Broncos offense has struggled since starting 6-0 and losing Marshall, who leads the team with 101 receptions, isn’t going to help. The next leading receiver on the team is Jabar Gaffney, who has 64 less catches.

The Broncos red zone offense has been pitiful this year and that’s where the loss of Marshall will hurt most. The Broncos can move the ball but they score on just 45.5% of their trips into the red zone, which ranks them 26th in the NFL.

Denver is playing a bad defense and a bad team but the Broncos have bad chemistry right now. It’s tough to predict what they will do.

Outlook & Pick

The Broncos need this game badly but as we have all found out in previous Week 17’s: must win does not mean will win.

The Broncos were in this type of a spot a few years ago when the San Francisco 49ers came into town on the last week of the season and pull the rug out. Kansas City is hapless but this is a division rivalry and the Chiefs can run the ball.

The Broncos offense has scored more than 19 points just three times in the last nine games while the defense has given up an average of 26 over the last three games.

It’s hard to pick the Broncos to lose two straight at home but there is no way to be convinced to lay the points.

Pick: Chiefs +11

Look for Denver to come away with big win today, but unless Baltimore or New York stumbles it will most likely be too little too late as far as making the playoffs.
