The Jets, despite last week’s disappointing, underachieving loss to Denver, are still in first place in the AFC East, a game ahead of both the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins. San Francisco has “pulled away” from its two competitors for second place in the NFC West, but even though they are not mathematically eliminated, they are three games in back of Arizona with four games to go. The Niners have covered two of their six games at home, and three of their nine games as an underdog. The bright side of the story is that under Mike Singletary, they have covered three of five games.

Shaun Hill has been okay as the starter for San Francisco. He’s hitting 60% of his passes, with just three interceptions in 139 attempts. Of course, the Niners were aided by a couple of missed field goals by Buffalo’s Rian Lindell, and were only able to gain 195 total yards on offense, but the defense played well in the red zone, and they turned back the Bills 10-3 last week. Under Singletary, they can win games like that because the new offensive approach, one that will eventually find offensive coordinator Mike Martz relieved of his duties, is one of safety first, and taking care of the ball.

The Jets offense behind Brett Favre is not as bad as Buffalo is when in the red zone; indeed, New York has scored touchdowns in 51% of situations inside the 20. But that’s still not brilliant, and the Niners are fourth in the league, and tops in the NFC, at holding the opposition below six points in the red zone.

It would be logical to assume that Frank Gore (only 92 yards last two weeks) is going to have to get things cranked up for the Niners to be in really good shape. And the Jets have been damned good at stopping the run (3.5 ypc allowed). But let’s put a few things together here. The Jets are traveling to the west coast. They have not done particularly well in either of their trips there this season (losing to San Diego and Oakland). Brett Favre (with 14 interceptions) is probably more likely to make the big mistake than Hill. And Singletary and his players are operating with more enthusiasm, perhaps a by-product of everyone wanting to keep his job next year.

At any rate, we’ll grab the points at home with the Niners, the four-point underdog in the BetUS NFL pro football sports betting odds.
