Sunday Night Football – Eagles, Giants Fight For Playoff Life

There will be more than just some good old-fashioned divisional hatred on the line when the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants meet up on Sunday night. The Eagles currently hold the No. 5 seed in the NFC playoff picture while the New York Giants are the No. 7 seed – just one game behind.

This is a very important game for tiebreakers because with a win, the Giants would tie the Eagles with their overall record but they would also move to 4-1 in the division. Meanwhile, the Eagles would fall to 3-2 in NFC East play, which would hand one of the tiebreakers over to New York.

The Eagles have won three straight in this series including a 40-17 route earlier in the year. The Eagles passing game carved up the Giants defense while the pass rush was not a factor against Donovan McNabb.

But in the last meeting, the Giants were in the midst of a slump and since they have played better of late, look for them to bring their ‘A’ game with the season on the line.

Eagles offense versus Giants defense

The Eagles passing game shredded the Giants in the first meeting but a few factors will change around for this contest. For starters, the game will be played at Giants Stadium, which is a windy environment. That will hamper the Eagles, who are passing-oriented, more than it will hurt the Giants.

Secondly, the Giants should make adjustments in their coverages and they won’t play as basic schemes as they did the first time around. Also, the fact that DeSean Jackson is recovering from a concussion and Jeremy Maclin is battling plantar fasciitis will limit the Eagles ability to stretch the field.

The good news for Philly is that the Giants secondary has given up 13 touchdowns in the last five games. Even if the Giants make adjustments, they’ll still find the holes.

Giants offenses versus Eagles defense

When the Giants are winning in this series, it’s because their offensive line is dominating the Eagles defensive front. That has to happen for them to win this game.

Quarterback Eli Manning is hampered by a foot injury while the receiving corps is young and inconsistent. The Giants best path to victory is to run the ball and control the clock.

In the first meeting, they still ran for 141 yards on 32 carries, which shows that they will find the lanes. The conditions could be ugly so they’ll have to pound away with Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw to get the win.

Outlook & Pick

It’s going to be cold, there will be precipitation throughout the day with the potential of a very wet and ugly evening. Those conditions favor rush-oriented teams more than passing attacks.

The Giants won an ugly, playoff-style game last week against one division rival and look for them to do the same this week.

Pick: Giants -1

One reply on “Week 14 NFL Lines: Eagles vs. Giants”

The biggest strength of this Giant’s team was the ability of their offensive and defensive lines to dominate games. That was then and this is now as they no longer are pushing teams around up front. If you look at their rushing production over the past few games they are no longer controlling the line of scrimmage.

Eagles get the sweep over the Giants tonight.
