Apparently the Denver Broncos have gotten a certain monkey off their backs as they throttled the New York Giants on Thanksgiving night, ending a horrid four-game losing streak in which they were outscored by a total of 117-37. Now they are in the thick of the playoff race, in a position to hold a wild card spot or even challenge the San Diego Chargers for the AFC West title.

Is the nightmare over?

We don’t think it necessarily is, but we doubt seriously whether the Chiefs are the kind of team that can bring up those bad memories once again.

Kansas City was encouraged by a competitive OT loss to Jacksonville, which was followed by wins over Oakland and Pittsburgh, but they regressed last time out, as San Diego rolled up 426 yards and scored 43 points in the process of putting an end to Kansas City’s three-game streak of covering in the NFL betting odds.

It’s nice to see that Jamaal Charles is making himself a useful part of the KC offense (253 yards the last three weeks) and that Matt Cassel has thrown just two interceptions in the last four games. Still, while Cassel has brought some stability, he has not been anything sensational as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback (190 yards per game, 13 TD’s, 55.6%).

This week he’s facing the one guy in the world who knows best what he can and cannot do well, Josh McDaniels, who mentored him through that season in New England that eventually got Cassel his monster contract.

That works both ways as McDaniels probably got the job in Denver as a result of Cassel’s performance, and who wanted to trade for Cassel, which sparked the whole Jay Cutler controversy and subsequent deal.

Yes, it’s safe to say that McDaniels and his staff can probably come up with a game plan to combat Cassel and his limited offense. Remember that these teams haven’t met yet this year, so this will be the first confrontation between the two men. Let’s not forget that Cassel has been sacked 35 times on the season, and Denver has 32 sacks, with Elvis Dumervil leading the way with 14 of them. That’s what we call a bad matchup for the host.

It’s not as if the Chiefs set up a big road block at Arrowhead either. Yes, there was a time when seeing the Kansas City as a home underdog was an automatic “buy” sign, and we mean it when we say that it worked in a big way. Those days are gone, however; the Chiefs have covered just five of their last 23 home games, and they have lost ten of their last eleven at Arrowhead Stadium.

We’re going to take the Broncos in this game and lay the 4.5-point spread as it is posted in the BetUS NFL betting odds.
