After the first three weeks of the season, there wasn’t anyone who would have preferred the chances of the Carolina Panthers to those of the New York Jets. After all, the Jets had scored wins over Houston, New England and Tennessee, looking like a real contender in the AFC East, while the Panthers scored just 37 points in losing games to the Eagles, Falcons and Cowboys, leaving behind a flood of turnovers.

Times have changed. Quickly.

The Jets have lost six of the last seven, including a season sweep by the Dolphins. Meanwhile, Carolina has won four of their last seven games, covering four of their last six in the NFL betting odds, and has played themselves into at least some hope for an NFC wild card berth. While Jake Delhomme has thrown just one interception in his last four games after tossing 13 in the first six games, Mark Sanchez has thrown six TD’s and 14 interceptions in the last seven contests.

Leon Washington made one six-yard run against the Oakland Raiders on October 25, and broke his leg, keeping him out of action for the season. In that game against Oakland, which the Jets won 38-0, they had 316 yards on the ground. Ever since they’ve had to go into games without Washington, however, those numbers have taken a nosedive.

Over the last three games the Jets have gained just 341 rushing yards, and the significance of the figure is that the design of Rex Ryan’s offensive approach is to run first and do everything else second. Not coincidentally, they have lost all three games, both straight-up and in the NFL betting odds.

Of course, the reason the Jets want to run is because they want to take pressure off their rookie quarterback, Sanchez, who has completed just 24 of 51 passes with six INT’s in the two games the Jets have played since the bye week. They may have some success, because Carolina has yielded a total of 330 yards in the last two weeks to Miami and Atlanta. They’ve been banged up at the linebacker spot, with Thomas Davis and backup Landon Johnson both out for the year.

I’m not sure that’s as bug a loss as the Jets suffered when they lost defensive tackle Kris Jenkins, who has made the Pro Bowl as a member of both the Panthers and Jets, for the season. Remember that Carolina has a very effective thing going with running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, and they’ve had 819 yards rushing over the last four weeks.

I think Carolina can do more to strike at the weaknesses of the Jets than the other way around. They’re going in a better direction, and for what it’s worth, they have the more dependable quarterback. We’re taking the points and the Panthers in the BetUS NFL betting odds.

One reply on “Week 12 Panthers vs Jets NFL Predictions”

After a hot start the Jets have hit the skids while the Panthers have shown some life after a disatrous start. I like Carolina to add to New Yorks misery with a outright win on the road.
