For those of you who thought we were too hard on the Washington Redskins, maybe an apology is in order, because the St. Louis Rams, who actually lost in Washington, have been even more dysfunctional on offense. The Rams, unlike the ‘Skins, have exceeded 17 points (they lost a 23-20 overtime decision to Jacksonville), but on the season they have averaged just 9.8 points, with an average of less than five yards per offensive play, a 32% success rate on third down, and, while we’re at it, a defense that has permitted the opposition to convert almost 50% on its third down chances.

They have been outscored by a 221-77 margin, which will tend to keep you on the short end of the stick in the football betting odds.

Could there be a worse team for them to square off against at this point in time than the New Orleans Saints, who are averaging almost 38 points per game, with 17 touchdown passes out of Drew Brees, a 46% third down conversion rate, and seven TD’s on defense, as many as St. Louis has on OFFENSE? On top of that, I can’t see how the Saints could lack for incentive with an undefeated record to protect.

Marc Bulger has averaged 5.6 yards per passing attempt. Brees has averaged 8.8. That’s a difference that’s pretty scary. So is the fact that they can score points in a hurry; they have the ability to be down by double digits, then turn around and win by double digits. This could be the kind of game where the Rams don’t know what hit them. We mean it.

Certainly the atmosphere couldn’t bother New Orleans all that much. It represents the kind of conditions they like – controlled under a dome – and of the crowd that will show up, it probably won’t be too vocal. Remember that New Orleans can silence that crowd immediately, as well as the Rams’ football betting supporters.

Sure, Steven Jackson is somebody for the Saints to worry about (784 rushing yards), but if they can stack the line and make Bulger beat them, they can let the secondary, led by MVP candidate Darren Sharper (seven INT’s) take over. Under the circumstances, this number looks more than reasonable.

We’ll lay it with New Orleans, the 13.5-point favorite in the BetUS NFL football betting odds.
