As per usual, both teams are high in the standings, which means AFC positioning will be on the line. The Colts are a perfect 8-0 while the Pats are 6-2. A win for the Colts in this game and they likely won’t have to worry about the Patriots as far as seeding in the playoffs goes. A loss means the Pats are just one game within stealing the every-important home field advantage.

Both offenses come into this contest on a roll while both defenses are struggling. That should lead to an entertaining, high-scoring affair in this contest.

Patriots offense versus Colts defense

The Colts are missing two starters in their secondary as both safety Bob Sanders and cornerback Marlon Jackson will be out for this contest. That’s not great news as Randy Moss and Wes Welker come to town.

One interesting difference between the two offenses is that the Patriots have been able to run the ball a little better in recent weeks. There has been a renewed commitment to Laurence Maroney and he’s seen at least 13 carries in each of the last three games. Over that span, he’s averaged 5.4 yards per carry and scored a touchdown in each game. To no one’s surprise, the Pats are 3-0 in those games.

The Pats will have to control the clock a little bit and keep those dangerous Colts defensive ends on their toes. Maroney will have to be a factor for the Pats to win.

Colts offense versus Patriots defense

While the Pats have run the ball a little bit recently, the Colts don’t even bother anymore. The Colts have the 29th ranked rush offense with just 183 rushing attempts on the year (29th).

And while the Colts won’t both running the ball very much this weekend, they’ll surely pass plenty.

One noticeable advantage for the Colts will be their pass protection as the Patriots just don’t get to the quarterback very often. They have just 15 sacks on the year and we all know what Peyton Manning can do when he has time to dissect a defense.

Outlook & Pick
Both defense are limping and both offenses have clear advantages against the defenses. Beyond that, the Colts have been one of the best in the league this year at 8-0 and the Patriots have regained their swagger in recent weeks.

It’s a tough game to call but the points are enticing. Look for the Patriots running game to make a slight difference in this game as they squeak out a win.

Pick: Patriots +3

There is just too much momentum in New England’s favor as the pressure of remaining undefeated might be too much for the Colts to handle. These are still the two best teams in the AFC no matter who wins, so take the Pats and the points.
