Wildcard NFL Lines: Baltimore vs New England

Point spread, ATS odds, and moneyline betting and preview article for the 2010 Wild Card NFL playoff clash between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots…

Sunday NFL Betting – Ravens Have What It Takes

The Baltimore Ravens played a sloppy, undisciplined game against the New England Patriots back in Week 4 and they still had a shot at the end of the game to win it. If they have learned anything from that contest, they have an excellent chance to win.

Throw in the fact that the Patriots will be play without 123-reception man Wes Welker and you realize that the Ravens could be in very good shape to spring an upset.

They have the short end of the stick when it comes to experience but if they can stay focused, they can win this game.

Ravens offense versus Patriots defense

The Patriots defense has been nothing special this year and the Ravens have just the offense to take advantage. To beat the Patriots, the goal has to be to keep their offense on the sidelines and the Ravens have a powerful offensive line and a good running game to lean on.

The Patriots gave up 4.4 yards per carry this season, which should have the Ravens running backs Ray Rice and Willis McGahee salivating. The Ravens passing game isn’t potent but they get the job done. There will be a big onus on Joe Flacco to make smart throws; he’s no longer a rookie.

Patriots offense versus Ravens defense

The Patriots suffered a big blow when they lost Welker. Not only is he the man that moves the chains, the team is also thin at the position to begin with. Rookie Julian Edelman can fill the role but the Patriots would prefer to have both on the field at the same time.

The issue for New England is they don’t have anything that ‘wows’ you aside from Tom Brady and Randy Moss. If the Ravens can double-team Moss, Brady will have to find other options.

The Pats don’t have a great running game or a great offensive line, so they are going to be limited if they can find Moss down the field.

Outlook & Pick

The Patriots have been good this year but they haven’t been special. They have the pedigree and the playoff success that can propel them to a win in this round but they aren’t head and shoulders better than the Ravens.
The Ravens played them tough the first time around and if they cut down on the silly penalties, they’ll be in position to win this game. They are only 1-6 against playoff teams this year but they have been close. Look for them to get that cigar this week.

Pick: Ravens +3.5

One reply on “Wildcard NFL Lines: Baltimore vs New England”

I agree that New England is good , but not great this year and losing Welker certainly doesn’t help. However I still believe they are good enough to beat the Ravens by at least four points. They still have Tom Brady, who has the ability to do enough to just about beat anybody and they are playing at home.
