New York Jets @ Indianapolis Colts

Saturday, January 8, 8:05 p.m. ET
NFL betting favorite: Colts -3

The Indianapolis Colts face off against the New York Jets in the playoffs for the second straight year. Last season, they took down the Jets 30-17 in the AFC Championship at home. This season, they’re back on their home turf at Lucas Oil Stadium but only favored by three points. What gives?

Well, the Colts had their struggles in 2010. They couldn’t run the ball so teams keyed on Peyton Manning and forced turnovers out of him. They couldn’t stop the run, either. So, on paper, the Jets are a dangerous matchup with their fourth-ranked rushing offense and third-ranked rushing defense.

But the late-season trends make me think the Colts will be OK. They recommitted to the run late in the year and won their last four games. Manning had nine touchdown passes and just two picks over that streak. Also, Tom Brady and Jay Cutler may have exposed the Jets’ pass defense as slightly overrated. I think the Colts will get it done at home.

Prediction: Colts 24, Jets 17

Baltimore Ravens @ Kansas City Chiefs

Sunday, January 9, 1:00 p.m. ET
NFL betting favorite: Ravens -3

If you believe in intangibles, taking the Ravens makes sense in this game. The Chiefs are just happy to be in the playoffs after going 2-14 last season. Virtually all their high-impact players, including Matt Cassel, Dwayne Bowe (if healthy), Jamaal Charles and Brandon Flowers, are making their playoff debuts.

Meanwhile, the Ravens have a plethora of experienced, Pro-Bowl defenders in Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs and so on. They also have sure-handed possession receivers, a bellcow back in Ray Rice and a poised, third-year quarterback in Joe Flacco.

The Ravens are formidable against the run but the Chiefs are the best running team in football, averaging 164.2 yards per game. They won’t go quietly. But I think the Ravens will do enough to win this one. The Chiefs’ schedule was unbelievably soft this season. Just two of their 16 games were against teams that made the playoffs; one of those was against 7-9 Seattle. I just don’t think the Chiefs are ready for a well-rounded, veteran group like Baltimore.

Prediction: Ravens 21, Chiefs 14

Green Bay Packers @ Philadelphia Eagles

Sunday, January 9, 4:30 p.m. ET
NFL betting favorite: Packers +3

The Packers and Eagles are a pretty good bet to produce the highest-scoring, most entertaining game of the weekend. Both Aaron Rodgers and Michael Vick had huge years under center and love to make plays with their feet as well as throw for touchdowns.

Just a few weeks ago, the Eagles looked invincible. Their high-octane offense, the league’s No. 2 unit, tore apart one defense after another. But teams started figuring Vick out down the stretch, hitting him far more often and flustering him. Vick was still good late in the year but he showed chinks in his armor, throwing five interceptions in his last four starts compared to one in his first eight.

The Packers defense is loaded with playmakers and specializes in game-changing moments, ranking second in the NFL in both sacks and interceptions. Given how well Rodgers is playing and that their “D” is equipped to make life difficult for Vick, I like the Pack to pull off the upset.

Prediction: Packers 30, Eagles 27
