New England Patriots vs. Cleveland Browns

Let’s take stock here:

  1. Last year the Patriots let their best defensive lineman, Richard Seymour, go to Oakland for a draft choice.
  2. A few weeks ago they traded their best wideout, Randy Moss, to Minnesota for a draft pick.
  3. In the last few years the heart of the team’s defense has been either traded or has retired, and has been replaced by a bunch of kids.
  4. Two key players, Ty Warren and Kevin Faulk, are done for the season.
  5. They don’t even have an offensive or defensive coordinator.

The offense has struggled at times, the defensive gives up yards at a maddening pace. The running back corps is so banged up that an undrafted free agent now starts. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

Yet they win. Until at least Sunday at 4 p.m. EST and probably for another week, the Patriots have the best record in the NFL. Maybe it’s just that no one in the league has been able to figure out Bill Belichick, and Belichick has been able to figure out everyone else.

Maybe Tom Brady, now 20 months removed from that 2008 ACL tear, is just so much better than his opposing counterpart that it makes it a bit unfair.

Cleveland is next up for the 6-1 Patriots, and the only concern right now is the (remote) possibility that New England will be looking past the Browns and pointing toward what will probably be the game of the year in Pittsburgh on Nov. 14.

The Browns, who have a knack for winning only when Eric Mangini’s job looks to be resting on a banana peel, are coming off their bye week, which followed that improbably victory in New Orleans.

As of Tuesday the Browns said they had no idea who would start at quarterback, which is a decided step up from having no idea period.

NFL Trends:

The total has gone OVER in 7 of New England’s last 9 games
The total has gone UNDER in 8 of New England’s last 12 games on the road
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Cleveland’s last 5 games
Cleveland is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games at home
New England is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
New England is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games when playing Cleveland
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Cleveland’s last 6 games at home
Cleveland is 7-18 SU in its last 25 games

The picks: After an uneven start to the season that included a high-profile loss to the Jets in Week 2, the public began to separate itself from New England, and the Patriots have made bettors pay the price. NE is now 4-2-1 ATS. Belichick won’t admit it, but he has to still harbor some ill will toward former assistant and SpyGate snitch Eric Mangini from Mangini’s days with the Jets.

If a Seneca Wallace is able to go, he’ll probably get the start at QB as the Browns probably won’t want to start rookie Colt McCoy against a team that gives so many defensive looks.

Liking New England -5.5 here, with a less-solid play on the Under.
