Green Bay Packers vs. New York Jets

Last weekend was a welcome respite for those of us suffering from Jets Fatigue Syndrome, but with the bye week in the rear view mirror we have 10 solid weeks of Rex Ryan, so we might as well take a few aspirin and get ready. The HC of the NYJ finds himself in the catbird’s seat today. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

His team is 5-1 (tied for best in the league and tied with New England atop the AFC East), has had time for rest and recuperation, and gets a home game this Sunday against a bruised and battered Green Bay club that has been decimated by injuries and had to use every ounce of its emotion and energy against the Vikings this past Sunday night.

The Packers are embarking on a dangerous 4-game stretch. After dealing with the Jets, they return home for a battle against the desperate Cowboys, then have difficult road games at Minnesota (seems like these teams play 5 times a year) and Atlanta. It’s apparent that the NFC North is full of flawed teams, and a 9-7 record could be good enough to win the division in a tiebreaker. So the Pack will just keep on plugging, and hope to get to 9 or 10 wins and be relatively healthy come playoff time.

Green Bay has showed a curious propensity this year to lose to mediocre teams (Chicago, Washington, Miami), so maybe the Pack can step up their game against the Jets. Aaron Rodgers will be happy to know that the NYJ don’t get to the quarterback nearly as much as they did last season (they actually rank 13th this year), and New York has just the 12th-ranked defense (17th offense).

Picks: Jets -5.5 Over (42.5)

Opinion seems split on whether Mark Sanchez is the next Todd Blackledge or Norm Van Brocklin. Ryan himself at times appears torn between reining him in and letting the kid go over the top. A good guess here is that the Jets let LaDainian Tomlinson do the heavy lifting early against a beaten-down and out-sized Packer defensive line, then get exotic when Green Bay is forced to flood the box or eat first down after first down. Jets cover the number as GB experiences a huge letdown after the win over Minnesota.
