Washington Redskins vs. Carolina Panthers Preview
Carolina (1-4) is getting good play from rookie QB Cam Newton, but he has more INT than TD on the season and his play has translated into only 1 win. NFL lines have the panthers are 2.5-point home favorites in this game with a total of 43.
In their last games the Redskins lost to the Philadelphia Eagles 20-13 and the panthers lost to the Atlanta Falcons 31-17.
Beck has yet to win a start in the NFL and one of the main reasons he is playing is that Rex Grossman has 11 picks on the season. Beck and the Redskins 17th ranked passing offense has to avoid the turnover in this game and his main targets of TE Fred Davis and Jabar Gaffney have to step up and play well with their inexperienced QB under center.
The Redskins had a season low 42 rushing yards in last week’s loss and they have to get back to establishing the run early in this game. RB’s Ryan Torain and Tim Hightower. If he can play, will have to play well against a Carolina run defense that ranks 31st in the league and was torched last week on the ground against the Falcons.
Running the ball may not be easy for the Skins, who have issues on the offensive line with LG Kory Lichtensteiger suffering a season-ending injury last week and LT Trent Williams out for a couple of weeks with an ankle injury.
Newton has the 4th most passing yards in the league and he leads the Panthers and their 5th ranked passing offense. The Redskins and their 9th ranked pass defense have to contain WR Steve Smith, who has the 2nd most receiving yards in the league. Newton not only has 7 passing TD, but also 6 rushing TD and the Skins cannot let him make big plays with his legs. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
The Panthers struggled to run the ball last week and the RB duo of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart have to run the ball well this week against a Redskins’ run defense that ranks 11th in the league, but gave up 192 rushing yards to Philly last week.
The Skins are not a high scoring team and they have to get back to playing good all-around defense or they will lose this game and fall to 3-3 on the season.
