Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Miami Dolphins Preview

No T-Rexs roam the NFL landscape this season, and in a strange year in which merely good might be good enough, the Pittsburgh Steelers figure things are breaking their way. They got through Ben Roethlisberger’s 4-game suspension just fine, at 3-1, and now stand at 4-1. Yes the Steelers have 5 of the next 7 on the road and yes they have already had their bye week, but six weeks into the season Pittsburgh has already narrowed the AFC North into a 2-team race. Roethlisberger appears to have not lost a step while sitting out that suspension, and he enters the fray with fresh legs and four fewer weeks of wear and tear on his body than every other starting QB in the league.

Pittsburgh has won both its road games this season and the Dolphins have lost both of their home games, so it’s not surprising that oddsmakers have the Steelers laying 3 in this one. Stats geeks can also point to the points – namely, the Steelers have scored just about two for every one they have allowed this season, and Miami has given up more (112) than it has scored (89) despite winning three of five.

The Steelers drag the James Harrison controversy with them into Sun Life Stadium. Harrison got fined 75k for his violent hits on a couple of Browns last weekend, and last year’s defensive player of the year says he is so distraught and confused about the fines that he is contemplating quitting football. In a related story, Luxembourg is contemplating an invasion of China.

Picks: Steelers -3 and Under (40.5)

There are two keys to beating the Steelers – 1. Have a good quarterback 2. Protect him. The Dolphins don’t have 1., so 2. becomes moot.
Miami will no doubt try to keep the ball on the ground and hope Chad Henne doesn’t get into too many third-and-longs.
The Under is a solid play as the Steelers have always valued fundamental football and will gladly take a grind-it-out victory on the road.
