Free Week 5 NFL Totals Predictions

Its week FIVE of the 2009 NFL season and we pick and preview all of the week 5 matchups from an OVER/Under NFL betting perspective this season…

NFL Week 5 Over/Under Betting Preview

Week four heavily favored the home team as they went 12-2 outright and ATS. The N.Y. Giants were the only team to win and cover on the road, and the Bengals beat the Browns, but Cleveland covered the spread. Points were plentiful as well with nine games going over the total. So far, this was easily the most lopsided week of the year so the odds makers will need to adjust.

Here is a rundown of all this week’s games and the current lines as supplied by beted.com.

Week 5 Sunday Games

Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens (-9)
Current Over/Under 42

This is a battle for first place in the AFC North and a chance for the Bengals to prove they are for real. Take Cincinnati to cover and the over in this game.

Cleveland Browns at Buffalo Bills (-6)
Current Over/Under 40.5

Buffalo is playing progressively worse and Cleveland has been consistently bad so something has to give. Take the Browns to cover in a sloppy game that stays under.

Washington Redskins at Carolina Panthers (-4)
Current Over/Under 37.5

Coming off a bye, the Panthers should be able to get their first win of the year over a very mediocre Washington team. Carolina finally finds some offense so go with the over.

Pittsburgh Steelers (-10.5) at Detroit Lions
Current Over/Under 44

The Steelers will start to build some momentum and get their record back over .500. The Lions will hang in there for a while, but in the end will not cover. There will be enough points scored to take this game over.

Dallas Cowboys (-9) at Kansas City Chiefs
Current Over/Under 42.5

After an ugly loss to Denver, the Cowboys should bounce back against the 0-4 Chiefs, as Kansas City is ranked near the bottom of the league in just about every category. Take Dallas to cover, but the total points scored will be low so take stay with the under.

Oakland Raiders at New York Giants (-17) Over/Under 44.5
Current Over/Under 40.5

Eli Manning’s heal injury could be an issue in this game, but the Giants defense should easily keep the Raiders off the board. Take Oakland to cover the huge spread and stay with the under.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Philadelphia Eagles (-13.5)
Current Over/Under 42.5

Andy Reid’s Eagles are a perfect 10-0 the week after a bye. Factor in the home field advantage along with the fact that Tampa is one of the worst teams in the league and take Philadelphia to cover as well as the over.

Minnesota Vikings (-10.5) at St. Louis Rams
Current Over/Under 40

The Vikings should be able to keep things rolling against the “Worst Team on Turf” or any other surface for that matter. Go with Minnesota to cover as well as score enough for both teams to go over.

Atlanta Falcons at San Francisco 49ers (-2.5)
Current Over/Under 41

In one of the better match ups of the week, we’ll see if Atlanta can get RB Michael Turner and their running game going against a solid 49ers’ defense. I like the Falcons and the under.

Houston Texans at Arizona Cardinals (-5.5)
Current Over/Under 48

These are two of the most unpredictable teams in the league, so who knows what to expect. I’ll go with Houston to cover with the points adding up in bunches.

New England Patriots (-4) at Denver Broncos
Current Over/Under 41.5

The Broncos defense should be able to keep this game close, but New England will end Denver’s winning streak at four. I like the Patriots to cover and the total to stay under.

Jacksonville Jaguars (-3) at Seattle Seahawks
Current Over/Under: Currently OFF

To handicap the Seahawks you need to read the team’s medical report first. If QB Matt Hasselbeck, along with some of the other banged up Seattle players can go, look for this line to shift towards Seattle. At this point I’ll take Seattle in a low scoring game.

Indianapolis Colts (-4) at Tennessee Titans
Current Over/Under 46

This would normally be a trap game for the Colts, but Peyton Manning is playing too well. Take Indianapolis as well as the over.

Monday Night Football

Monday, Oct. 12

New York Jets (-1) at Miami Dolphins
Current Over/Under 36.5

If Jets QB Mark Sanchez can recover from last week’s meltdown in New Orleans and just manage this game, New York’s defense should be enough to shut Miami down and get the win. Tough defense from both teams will keep this game under.

There are some big points spreads out there this week, but be careful about jumping all over them.

Picks of the week: Cleveland @ Buffalo under and the Vikings -10½.
