New England Patriots vs. Miami Dolphins Preview

It’s not like the Patriots haven’t tried. God knows they’ve spent a lot of money and draft choices on the secondary. Since 2006 NE has used eight draft picks – including two first- and three second-rounders – on cornerbacks and/or safeties. And they still can’t stop anyone’s passing game.

Admittedly the lack of any kind of pass rush has been a factor, but giving up large chunks of real estate to the likes of Mark Sanchez and Ryan Fitzpatrick is a huge warning sign that not all is right in the defensive backfield. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

So heading into Monday night’s game, the Dolphins have a choice – do they stick with their bread-and-butter ground game and try to wear down NE’s front 7 by pile-driving Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, or do they see what Chad Henne can do against a Pats’ secondary that is young and in almost complete disarray?

Henne was decent (26/44, 2 TDs and 1 INT) in last weekend’s loss to the Jets after basically handing off to Brown and Williams in victories over Buffalo and Minnesota in Weeks 1 and 2.

The Patriots, of course, are all about offense. The pressure to put 28 to 35 points on the board every game is magnified every time a corner gets beat. And as always, Brady loves to move the ball around. Besides Randy Moss and Wes Welker, two of Brady’s new targets are rookie tight ends Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski. If the Dolphins have issues of their own defensively, it’s trying to cover opposing TEs.

Picks: Miami +1 and Under (46.5)

The Patriots have not been a great cover team since the early part of their historic 2007 season, when they crushed teams in response to SpyGate. This season the number to keep an eye on is the total. NE’s defense has given up successively more points each week (24, 28, 30), and there are no signs of things changing any time soon.

NE will have to score heavy to win, and that means not settling for field goals. Moss, in a contract year, will be looking to get to the end zone as much as possible to pad his stats.

The Pats have also just about abandoned the running game, although unheralded BenJarvus Green-Ellis (aka the Law Firm) has showed flashes.
