Tom Brady is starting to run out of people to call out.

Last week he (gently) criticized Gillette Stadium fans, saying that they’re so quiet that it doesn’t give the team much of an advantage playing in Foxboro – even though the Pats were 8-0 there last season and crushed Cincinnati in the opener this year. Then, after suffering a second straight beatdown by the Jets in New York, an obviously unhappy Brady showed uncharacteristic language in analyzing his team’s performance – “We sucked.”

Fortunately, help is on the way. Not only does New England get another home game, but on board this Sunday are the Buffalo Bills. The Bills almost never win at Gillette, and things are so bad in western New York that bloggers are demanding that people stay home so the games won’t sell out and fans won’t have to watch the Bills on TV. Buffalo is a nice round 0-2 after last week’s 34-7 smackdown in Green Bay, and if you put owner Ralph Wilson’s feet to the fire (something many fans would no doubt relish), he’d sign right now for 6-10.

But Buffalo’s problems are about as old as Ralph himself, and the Patriots no doubt will spend a very uncomfortable week of practice as Bill Belichick dissects a second-half meltdown in East Rutherford that was strikingly similar to late-game problems the Patriots experienced in several road games last year – a young defense that gives up huge chunks of yardage and an offense that becomes predictable and stagnant. Brady, who basically wrote his ticket to the Hall of Fame via Super Bowl victories and second-half comebacks, was rendered ineffective last Sunday by a Jets defense that seemed to lose a player for every set of downs. No matter. The New England O-line couldn’t block, the receivers turtled, and Brady himself rushed throws and for one of the few times in his career looked stressed in the pocket.

NE’s loss makes it a wide-open race in the AFC East, and puts more importance in a Bills-Pats matchup that in the past has had little bearing on the division – even if the fans in Foxboro are unaware of it.

Picks – Usually the best move is to bet early, but this may be the exception. The opening line (NE -12.5) figures to fatten during through the middle of the week as the public gets around to wagering, and number should bump to at least 13.5, which would be attractive for Bills backers.

At 42.5, the under deserves a long look – the teams have gone over only two of the last nine games at New England.

The Pats could be without third-down specialist Kevin Faulk, who was injured in the Jets game.
