The San Francisco 49ers started out the 2008 season with Mike Martz as their offensive coordinator, and they started to take a turn toward a wide-open passing attack, though they didn’t really have the personnel to make it so. When Mike Singletary took over as the interim head coach following the firing of Mike Nolan, that gave him the opportunity to remake the character of the offense, and that meant the eventual dismissal of Martz.

Now the 49ers are a “run first, second and third” team, and they’ll pass it if they have an opening. That requires a quarterback who can take care of the ball, and they think they have that kind of guy in Shawn Hill, who is 65% accurate and hasn’t thrown an interception.

The Vikings wanted to be like that too, when they had people like Tarvaris Jackson and Gus Frerotte playing quarterback. They blundered eventually. Now they have what San Francisco doesn’t, which is a QB who can open up the offense and provide a proper balance to keep defenses from overplaying Adrian Peterson (272 yards, 6.8 ypc). If Brett Favre (77%, no INT’s) remembers that, things can turn out much better than last season.

Frank Gore was absolutely sensational for the Niners last week, running for 207 yards behind touchdown runs of 79 and 80 yards. This was a sharp contrast to what San Francisco was able to do in the first game, when they still managed to beat Arizona. I’m not sure things are going to work out that way for San Francisco in this game.

Minnesota can stop the run with Kevin and Pat Williams, and if they don’t have to worry all that much about Hill making big plays to stretch the defense, the Vikings are going to be able to clog the middle very effectively. Singletary has no one who can threaten a defense through the air, unless you want to count aging Isaac Bruce (106 yards receiving). Does he wish Michael Crabtree was in the fold? You better believe it!

Sure, San Francisco has a tough defensive unit, led by middle linebacker Patrick Willis, which can’t help but get nastier with Singletary cracking the whip, but Minnesota gets an edge here because it can do more on offense, even with short passing (Favre’s longest completion is 21 yards). Percy Harvin (eight catches) is proving to be someone Favre can go to. That will continue.

Let’s lay the points with the Vikings, the 6.5-point favorite in the BetUS NFL pro football betting odds.

This should be a good hard nosed battle featuring two of the best running backs in the game, Adrian Peterson and Frank Gore. Whichever of these two who has the best game should help their team get the win.
