Carolina hung around with the Giants for a half, but eventually it was overwhelmed by the New York “D.” The team was hoping Matt Moore would solidify an offense already boasting an impressive running game—Moore closed out last year on a three-game winning streak—but, if his three interceptions, four sacks and 42.4 completion percentage are any indication, its not going to happen. Moore finally succumbed to a concussion, though he’s probable this week.
The Panthers didn’t run the ball as much as they should. They had 24 carries—two from Moore—but should be in the 30-35 range with DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart in the backfield. Stewart, who rushed for over 1100 yards last year, was given just five carries.
Defensively, the Panthers were pretty solid—five turnovers by Moore and Co. killed them. The Giants got a good day from Eli Manning (263 yards, three scores) but Carolina picked him off three times. The Panthers also held New York to just 3.3 yards per carry.
Tampa Bay jumped to a 1-0 start with a 17-14 win over the Browns. The defense did an excellent job, though playing against Jake Delhomme certainly didn’t help. The Buccs picked Delhomme off twice and recovered a fumble for good measure. There were a few holes in the run defense, though, as Tampa surrendered 4.5 yards per pop to an average-at-best ground attack.
The Buccaneers did just enough against an underwhelming Browns defense. Josh Freeman’s second year in the NFL got off to a solid, if unspectacular start; Freeman completed 17 of his 28 passes for 182 yards and a pair of scores. He has to do a better job cutting down negative plays, however, after being sacked three times and throwing an interception. The Buccs also lost a fumble. Carnell Williams got the bulk of work at tailback, carrying 22 times for 75 yards. If his average per carry doesn’t climb in the near future, he could start losing touches to Kareem Huggins or Ernest Graham.
Though the Panthers got creamed in the second half against New York, they’re a solid football team—better than last year, anyway. Whether or not Moore is able to start, Carolina is almost sure to rely on a heavy dose of the running game. Considering Jerome Harrison and Peyton Hillis cut through the Tampa “D” with relative ease, it is frightening to imagine what DeAngelo Williams and Jon Stewart will do.
