Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets Preview

On any given Sunday one of two things has to happen for the Jets to win: Mark Sanchez has to have a decent game and not be turning over the ball, or the defense has to play out of its mind to compensate.

Since it’s pretty obvious that the Jets never know what they’re going to get out of Sanchez, attention is focused on the defense which gave up 38 points last week in that loss in Chicago. The D also came up flat in New England (45 allowed), though sandwiched in between was a solid effort in Pittsburgh.

     So what’s happening?

Defensive end Shaun Ellis said this week that the team has lapsed into a Patriots-like read-and-react defensive posture, abandoning the attacking style that earned it street cred earlier in the season. Maybe. What is certain is that the Jets have given up 14 offensive touchdowns and an average of 27.5 points in the past four games. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

Part of the problem is the Jets’ inability to stop big plays – in those four games the Jets have allowed 11 plays for 20 or more yards, and 18 plays for 15 yards or greater.

While the Jets try to repair the business model in time for the start of the playoffs next week, they’ll be doing so as they simultaneously work to get/keep everyone healthy. How much playing time the regulars – including Sanchez — get against the Bills is anyone’s guess. Even Rex Ryan, who will tell you even things you don’t really care to know, professes that he’s still grappling with the playing time issue.

The Bills, meanwhile, will be trying to shake off the effects of that 7-turnover loss to New England last week. Even with that defeat, it’s been a decent second half of the season for the Bills, who have been every bit as good as the Jets (4-3) since the midway point of the season.

Betting Trends:

The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Buffalo’s last 5 games
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Buffalo’s last 6 games on the road
The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Buffalo’s last 9 games when playing on the road against NY Jets
Buffalo is 4-8 SU in their last 12 games when playing on the road against NY Jets
NY Jets are 4-1 SU in their last 5 games when playing Buffalo
The total has gone OVER in 11 of the NY Jets last 14 games
NY Jets are 10-4 SU in their last 14 games
NY Jets are 4-2 SU in their last 6 games at home

The pick: Motivation is everything at this time of year, and the Jets don’t have much beyond getting themselves primed for the playoffs.

The Bills have had plenty of ups and downs on their way to a 4-11 year, but the team is playing hard and the coaching staff can make a solid argument that they have the franchise pointed in the right direction.

Liking Buffalo to win this one, with an additional play on the over un less the number goes to 40.
