Detroit Lions vs. Miami Dolphins Preview

What the hell was wrong with the Miami Dolphins this season?

What was wrong, we mean, besides the puzzling inability to win games at home, the OK-but-never-great quarterback play of Chad Henne and the almost-incomprehensible poor play on special teams.

As Rosanne Rosanadana said, “If it ain’t one thing, it’s the other.” Nothing seemed to work for the Fins this season. Miami (7-7) enters the final two games of the regular season out of the playoffs and has once again tread water after winning the AFC East two seasons ago at 11-5.

There have been a few bizarre losses to losing teams (Buffalo, Cleveland, both at home), but those have been balanced off by nice victories over Green Bay and the Jets (naturally, both on the road). Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

Talk in Miami now is about the team getting faster, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The Dolphins are just not making plays, and the defensive coaches blame a lack of speed. Just add it to the list of everything this team needs to improve enough to make life at least interesting for the Jets and Patriots in the division.

The Dolphins would probably never say it, but management would no doubt gladly trade rosters with the Lions (4-10), who have assembled playmakers everywhere and may be one more draft and a healthy Matthew Stafford away from joining the Packers and Bears in a three-way battle for top-dog status in the NFC North.

Jahvid Best is a legit featured back, wideout Calvin Johnson and tight end Brandon Pettigrew are as good a 1-2 receiving punch as exists in the league, and even the tough-guy O-linemen in the league are not in love with the idea of trying to block Ndamukong Suh. Jim Schwartz has put together a nice package around the playmakers, and with some more depth and a few breaks injury-wise, the Lions can make a big move.

Except for the loss to New England when everyone on special teams had brain farts, the Dolphins have been competitive in home games – three-point loss to Bills, three-point loss to the Browns, one-point loss to the Steelers.

Stafford’s array of injuries has limited Detroit’s offense, and as of Christmas Eve Detroit wouldn’t tell whether Drew Stanton or Shaun Hill would get the call. With that uncertainty this late in the week, give the edge to the Dolphins.

Betting Trends:

The total has gone OVER in 8 of Detroit’s last 11 games
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Detroit’s last 6 games when playing Miami
Detroit is 5-8-2 ATS in its last 15 games on the road
Detroit is 4-16 SU in its last 20 games
Miami is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games when playing Detroit
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Miami’s last 5 games
The total has gone OVER in 10 of Miami’s last 15 games at home
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Miami’s last 6 games when playing Detroit

Picks: It’s never a wise idea to lean on the law of averages in wagering, but seriously – can the Dolphins continue to be this bad at home right to the end of the season?
