Miami Dolphins vs. New York Jets Preview

We pretty much know what most teams are made of at this point of the season, but the Jets’ beatdown in New England last Monday night raised concerns, red flags and doubt about this summer’s self-proclaimed Super Bowl champions. They say it’s not bragging if you do it; the Jets haven’t quite done it yet.

So now the 9-3 Jets head into the final 25 percent of the schedule having to prove themselves all over again despite owning the third-best record in the league. Starting with this week at home against Miami, continuing with games at Pittsburgh and Chicago, and finishing at home against Buffalo, the Jets will find out a lot about themselves over the next 3½ weeks.

And that goes triple for QB Mark Sanchez, who was miserable in the wind, cold and bright lights of Foxboro last Monday and in his last two games in New England has a total of 7 interceptions. Any time the talk around the team is about running the ball more, it’s a pretty good indication that your quarterback is not throwing the ball all that well. Sanchez is the 25th-ranked QB in the league this season, which is a slight bump-up from last season’s 28th. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

If Sanchez is, as some suspect, a warm-weather quarterback, there is some comfort in the fact that the Jets can still run the ball – statistically, at least, they get 4-plus yards every time they hand off. Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson appear to still have some bounce.

With the Steelers and Bears next on the schedule, the importance of putting away the 6-6 Dolphins can’t be underestimated. The Jets have never had an easy time of it against Miami, and the Dolphins are schizophrenic enough this season to give anyone a game on any given weekend. Whether they have any fight left after a tough loss at home to the Browns last Sunday is anyone’s guess.

Betting Trends:

Under is 8-1 in MIA last 9 games in Week 14.
MIA are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 road games.
MIA are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 vs. AFC East.
Under is 7-1-2 in NYJ last 10 games in Week 14.
Over is 9-2 in NYJ last 11 games overall.
Under is 10-3 in NYJ last 13 games in December.
Road team is 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 meetings.
MIA are 7-21-2 ATS in their last 30 meetings.

THE PICKS: There is some good news for Jets fans. Last season, after a lopsided loss in New England, the NYJ won 5 of their final 6 (OK, the Indy and Cincy games shouldn’t count) and got all the way to the AFC Championship game.

They also covered the line 5 of those 6 times, so be careful before you start to fade this bunch.

With New York’s re-emphasis on the ground game and the Dolphins’ concerns about Chad Henne, a good look at the under (39.5) would be worthwhile.
