Houston will be looking to start the season with a big win in primetime as it hopes to reach the postseason for the third consecutive season after being crowned last seasons’s AFC South champions, sporting an impressive record of 12-4.

The Texans also earned a postseason win over the Bengals for a second consecutive season, winning a close Wild Card contest at Reliant Stadium.

Because of that, Houston is listed as a three-point road favorite in this one, and the Over/Under is set at 46 points.

San Diego on the other hand is a much different story, and will aim get back in the hunt for a playoff spot with an early season win after missing the postseason for a third straight season in 2012, posting its first sub .500 record since 2003.

That finish led the team to fire haed coach Norv Turner, opting to bring on former Broncos’ offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, who will rely heavily on quarterback Philip Rivers to jumpstart the Chargers offense in 2013. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Coming off two straight disappointing years, the Chargers success in this one will depend on how well Rivers performs, and could provide an barometer of what kind of season its going to be in San Diego.

While one of the long-held beliefs in football wagering has been to simply go with the home underdog on Monday night, I just can’t bring myself to lay down any amount of my hard-earned money on the Chargers.

However, Houston hasn’t been a team that has performed well against San Diego, and are 0-3 in three meetings with the Bolts, losing by an average of 11.3 points per game.

Meanwhile, San Diego was 3-5 at home last season.

Houston , though posted a 6-2 road record in 2012, making this game even that much more difficult to predict.

So, when all else fails you have to turn to the numbers, because they don’t lie.

The Texans are 4-0 straight up and 3-1 against the spread in their last four games as a road favorite with a spread between 0 and 3.5 points.

In my opinion that makes them the right choice in this one, along with the UNDER.
